Looked through lots of threads and I don't see ext cab taco's with a custom built sub enclosure that allows for use of the rear seats. Don't get me wrong, theres lots of cool builds on this, but not very many with full functioning rear seats.

And pretty much the only way to do this with the proper air space for the subs is to modify the floor pan.

So this is what I built.



3/4'' mdf and about 6 layers of fiberglass on the bottom.




Little bit of bondo



Little bit of sanding



Lots of primer



And a multitexture paint, very cool IMO



End result is awesome. Its 2 10'' JLW1's with alpine 500w mono. Subs call for .625 air space and I've got about .6 and some polyfill to make up the difference. Sounds great, and only took about 20hrs ish.





Anybody else got pics of similar setups please post em up. By similar I mean any extended cab sub box that still allows for seat use.

Ya there was some storage space, had to do away with that. Now I just keep everything i the toolbox in the bed. I would have kept it if it were possible.

sooo.. the original storage compartments under the jump seats. how did you remove them? ive always wanted to do this to my '92. right now i have 2 10's in boxes sitting on the jumpseats

 

Once you peel the carpet back youll see that the whole thing unbolts from the floor pan, leaving you with nothing there. But its still not enough, to get the air space and depth for the subs, youll have to actually "mod" the floor pan. And by mod i mean cut. But IMO its the only way to achieve this and still be able to use the jump seats.

You can kinda see where i cut the floor out in this pic. Wish I took one of the foor without the wood there.



Then you form tin foil into the holes and along the floor pan (make sure to tape your seams, you dont want leaks) and begin fiberglassing the bottom. Since its a perfect mold of the floor pan it plugs the holes you cut. I used some caulking apon installation around the perimeter of the holes. The box is glued to the floor and is sealed off from outside.

Then I made a heat shield for the exhaust becuase its about 3 inches from the bottem of my box.

If you can imagine that picture without the top peices of wood it would just be sides. Thats where you start with your fiberglass. Basically building the bottem half of the box in the truck, then you can remove it and finish it outside the truck. Once its out of the truck you can do a lot better job of making sure its airtight, and very solid (the bottom needs to be an 3/16''-1/4'' thick of fiberglass). Or at least thick enough to where you cant flex any portion of it by pushing hard on it with your thumb.

Its a big job IMO, had to remove the interior of the truck, precautions need to be takin so that you dont get fiberglass spills in the cab, building the box can be very time consuming and theres lots of steps, then there installing it whens its all done, its pretty heavy and big and if you measure everything right it should fit pretty snug.

Im not the best at explaining and wish I took more pics, but any questions feel free to ask.

Almost forgot to finish this. You have to do something about those pesky bench seats being push through.

I would've aimed the subs down, just so they would be hidden and not firing into the bottom of the seats when you had passengers.

 

But then they would be muffled sounding and have the wrong air space, becuase the hole cab would be the sub box, not just the sub box. Subs work the best with the proper air space (behind) them. The subs that you do see aimed down, such as home theater systems, are still in an enclosure but pointed at the floor with a few inches of space between the floor and sub. And theres no way theres enough room in the back seat of a tacoma for that setup while maintaining rear seats, atleast not done right. Especially considering I had to modify the floor pan just to get enough air space. Unless you want to buy $800 shallow mount subs , then you can mount them in your ashtray upside down. And I rarelly have passengers, just wanted to keep the capability. When I do have passengers I just shut them off or turn them way down.
