Adding Subwoofers To '03?
I have two 12" Alpine Subs and I was thinking about adding them to my 4Runner.
1) Do that make a box that will fit under the double deck cargo?
2) Could I tie them into the jbl amp?
3)How the HELL do I get to the amp and sub?

I can help you, but I need some more specifics on what you are trying to accomplish as far as sound quality, Peak and RMS required by the subs, etc, etc. There is now way that you can tap into the JBL stock amp and produce enough power to drive the subs successfully...it is tiny. I have 2 13.5W7-1.5's in the rear of mine and had to yank the cargo cover deal as I computerized and customed my box to hold the amps on the reverside, hiding them within the box behind the seat. I think the max height you can go while maintaining the cargo cover is 17" if I remember correctly...so yes, you could fit 2 12's in a box below the cover. Just get back to me with what you want to do and we can roll from there.

I have 2 12" Alpine Subwoofers and a 250xwatt MTX amp.
The amp and subs worked perfect in my jeep.
I was thinking about adding them to my 4runner under the double deck cargo to make the "hidden". I want to add just a little more bass sound to my system. Maybe i only need one sub???
Thanks for the help.

Hey, sorry for the long departure. I'd say, if you have 2 12's run both of em. I am not very familiar with the subs you have, (you didn't supply any info as far as their model, Peak or RMS wattage, etc), and 250 watts to run 2 of them is definitely on the low end. If you are looking for sound quality, just build about a 2' sealed cubic box open all the way thru to house the two subs. If you want more bass, and aren't extremely worried about crisp sound, I'd say slot port the box on each end and make it 2.5' cubic. Get back to me if you have any more questions. Is the MTX a 2 or 4 channel? And what model # is it?

Not to bust in on anybody elses parade, but i really like that box from circuit city that jgrimball is talking about, but in my case I'm using 2 10" Kicker's and I like the idea of getting a flat box and laying it down on it's back and have it aimed at the underside of the shelf. Any more info would be a great help to me aswell.

Great, thanks for the info. If the setup worked in your jeep, it will work again. I'm just one of those stupid mother******* that seems to go extremely overboard on every system I build. Though I am not familiar with your subs, they sound like a good quality product. So, really the only question I would pose to you would be what you are looking for as far as sound quality. A sealed box is going to hit tighter and take up less space. The smaller the box, the greater the opportunity for a broader range of frequency...this is a line you have to balance though, because if you go too small, you will not get as much x-max (total of the inward and outward movement, ie 3.5") out of your subs at low frequency levels. I am personally not a huge fan of ported boxes, but they can be very successful as well. Sound quality will not be as tight or true, but they do add Db for free and also allow a lesser speaker to move more air/succeed at producing more bass. As far as the box, the one you provided a link to would be perfect as far as airspace, but other than that...I would not recommend it. I could not find out how thick the MDF they used was, and I would recommend at least 3/4" high density, not medium density particle board. The box looked very thin, maybe 3/8 to 1/2" thick wood...prob 1/2". Another negativity about that box is that it is plumbed with 16 gauge. At a minimum I would reccomend 12 gauge, or even 8 gauge. You are probably getting a biast opinion from me, but I have never been a fan of generic prebuilt boxes. Now if you were ordering say 1 JL 10W7-3, JL Audio has a box built exactly for that sub, allowing it to perfrom to its maximum capability. If you have any kind of talent with a skill saw, you could just get the recommended specs for your subs and buy a sheet of high density for under $20 and have the box built to sit in your vehicle exactly how you want it. Then just run by an audio place and buy a couple yards of carpet and some spray adhesive, and you'd have a direct match in carpet color to your vehicle as well. It all truly depends on how much time, $, and effort you want to put into it. As far as the post talking about aiming the subs at the "underside of the shelf", I am not sure exactly what you mean, but if you are referring to being able to close the retractable covering and run your subs at the same time, it is going to probably give you the worst imaginal sound you could dream up. If you are referring to the double decker cargo shelf, that would be a much more logical approach. I truly would just say point them directly at the rear, pop off the plastic panel, run a couple layers of dnyomat, throw the plastic back on, and you'll be set...it's only two bolts to remove it. Just dont be a dumb sh** like me and blow out your back window.
I hope this helps you. Either of you guys feel free to hit me back with questions, etc.

I was hoping i could find a box that would fit UNDER the rear cargo deck. It looks kinda smaller than i thought.
If i can get a box how would that work under there?
Thanks for all the info.

Make your own box, thats what i did. I saved so mcuh money $, and i only took a couple of yours to do it. I oayed $20 for a sheet of Meduim Density Board, measured to factory spects and built it by wood glue, wood screws and making it sealed by cock.

JGRIM-
Hey, great to see you came up with a solution. Sorry for my lack of help the last couple days. I was thinking it would be pretty tight to get 10's or 12's into a box that would fit under the shelf...just not enough depth. There are probably some 8's out there that would work. I forget if you gave the actual height of that space or not...another route would be 6" drivers that actually hit surprisingly well...JL makes one that is great for door applications. Anyway, glad to hear you got her handled. We'd all love the pics.
