suck tastic search

what the hell happened to the search. it was a great feature that now sucks.

when i was trying to find the old thread "does the airplane take off" (if its not deleted)

and so i search for ................... does the airplane take off

and get this

"The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search: does, the, take, off"

so you searched for airplane... hmmm not very helpfull...

ill try quotes ie my phrase is "does the airplane take off"

and now it returns
" Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.

The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search : the, take "

huh?!?!

what the hell happened.

Search works fine for me.
I always thought we had one of the better searches here.

i've noticed that as well but just assumed nothing could be changed. it always filters out "too common words" and disregards quotes for searching a whole phrase. oh well

Search engine limitations...

Are there limitations to YT's search engine?? Are acronyms to be avoided while searching??

Over the past few days, I've attempted numerous searches for "ome", "890", "old", "man", "emu", "old man emu", etc. all of which only generated a "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms" message. I know some of these are pretty common words, but I would think many of the above would've provided a fair number of hits...

Those should work.
If not now, chalk it up to the crash.

Forgive me for being stupid, but how does a server crash some months ago continue to incapacitate the search engine? Does the search engine use a separate backend Db which is populated over time?? If so, was that Db corrupted as well? Will the search engine ever provide hits for "old man emu" in the future??

This is the first I've heard of a search engine problem. Sure enough OME and Old Man Emu come up with nothing. That bites it.

When we crashed, then restored and then upgraded something must have changed inadvertantly. The search uses the same DB, but different tables. These should have been rebuilt previously during the restore/upgrade, but it's possible they weren't or some other factor fubar'd it..

I'm looking into a cure.

Okie dokie.... just seemed a bit odd when I couldn't get any hits on a couple not so common words/phrases that I knew existed in the forum threads.

I am finding a whole bunch of 3 letter acronyms that don't work (might be nice to more the min search characters to 2)....

Car related...
AC
A/C
AWD
4WD
TPS
IAC
PCV
MAF
OBD
S/C
T/C
TDC
BDC
ECU
ECM
FSM
DTC
ECT
EGT
EGR
MPH
RPM
SFI
TPI
TB
TBI

I am sure I could go on for a while.

Non car related.....
UFC

Ditto on the many more.....more like endless.

Makes it very hard to find stuff now since 3 letter acronyms are used alot.

Found out that you can't even do a search for FAQ, yet, we have several threads with FAQ in the thread title.

I've been having issues with searching, too. For example, I want to dechrome my rear bumper. I know someone went to great lengths to post how it's done. So I performed several searches: dechrome, de-chrome, removing chrome, chrome, painting rear bumper. I got a lot of results, just not the ones I'm looking for.

Hey Corey, any idea if this will have a fix soon?
Maybe you could just manually put a few of the acronyms into the search database again?

MYSQL FULLTEXT PRACTICES

Greetings from behind the scenes.

Yotatech awhile back changed from using vBulletin Index Searches to using MySQL FULLTEXT searches. The reason for doing this, while is up for another discussion, is based solely on the performance gained through using MySQL FULLTEXT search, vs vBulletin's.

The disadvantages to the FULLTEXT search may be enough to keep people confused. But, once you understand it, it really makes total sense.

For example...

If I search for "4WD", I will get zero results. But, if I do a search for "4WD Truck", I will get 231 results. If I do a search for "4WD Toyota" I will get 214 results.

Words that are common or to short, may not produce any results, because they are considered generic. Think about it this way, if you did a search on "The", in all honesty, what is going to come back? How do you prioritize a search based on "The". But, if you add additional words to narrow your search, the world of search results open up to you.

The key here is, you can search for 3-letter words, you just can't search on them alone. Tag them with another more unique word.

The problem with this is that "4WD truck" doesn't cover "Hey, I can't get into 4WD", or "Why doesn't 4WD engage?", or "4WD worked yesterday"... All may give clues to a thread that has answers for someone looking into 4WD problems.

Your example of "The" is well meant, but "the" is MUCH more common than "4WD", even on an off-road forum.

Jamie also had (imo) valid points about other 3-letter acronyms. All of those are specific enough that they don't/won't appear in a common English sentence, but would be useful to use _here_ in a search.

How much is the search string parsed? For example, can I use wildcards? What about OR/AND/NOT logic? (well, I guess OR is implied) Logical sets with parens? Forcing hits on all keywords?
