I'm stoked, took 3½ months to get the parts and I'm hoping to get it in the truck right after I finish the rear axle work. Probably 4-6 weeks if I can get a driveshaft made in time.

What's the plan? You gonna put those gears in a junkyard case? Or put them in the primary and add a stock case?

Dual cases. Take a look at the first pic in the top right corner, that thing is a modified reduction housing (to clear the 4.7 gears) which will become part of the existing transfer case. The original reduction housing that's in the truck will become the front half of the crawler.

But my understanding was that you needed a second case - the Crawler (lower right, correct?) is just an adapter to attach a secondary case. Hence "dual case". No?

"Dual case" is a misnomer, it's actually just "dual reduction boxes" on a single transfer case. Yes, that thing in the lower right is the adapter, and all the rest of the junk there is the second reduction box. I'd link you to a page on Marlin's website about it but they forgot to pay the bill on their domain name and I can't get to it at the moment.

OIC, you don't need a whole other case, just a second reduction housing:

So you'll bolt those gears and reduction unit into your stock case, then the adapter, then bolt the stock housing and gears to the adapter. Right?

I agree:

Exactly! But try buying just the reduction portion of a transfercase from a junkyard, they'll laugh at ya. That's why most everyone picks up a complete transfer case to get the parts from and toss the extras. In my area if you can find one they're selling for more than the cost for buying the empty housing already clearanced from Marlin in addition to eating the core charge for the parts.

You got it.

[side note] strange that some people can still get into their website, comes up as an invalid domain for me.

That's what confused me. I kept seeing posts about people getting a whole other case from Fred Sanford.

I dunno what the site's problem is. I can get into parts of it - and that picture actually resides on the site, so you are actually accessing it when you read this thread. But most of it is broken.

I'm not seeing the pic you put in your post, this is why. Look at the expiration date, the domain name is starting to drop off DNS servers.

Ahhh....my machine must have had the DNS entry cached and now the picture cached.

But I thought this was a crawler discussion - not a network geek discussion!

I just had my first chance to use the crawler today. We built a huge rock pile on the course that we built for the July 4th Obstacle course we're putting on. I slipped it in to Oh My God that's Low gear and walked across the entire thing at 1000 rpm with only a couple slips. The rocks were dry, which helped but I didn't even need to air down. What a difference on an obstacle like that!

The only pics I got were old fashioned ones so I'll have to wait till they get developed before I can post anything.

Cool! I'm hoping to be installing this thing in a couple weeks, possible next weekend if the driveshaft gets back to me from Jess' shop in time.

Shane, I ran into a problem with my install using the AA 6cyl to 4cyl adapter. The rear transmission seal that supposed to go around the coupler was completely the wrong size. I don't know if this was supposed to come with the AA kit (I bought it used) or what the story was. Because this was so mis-sized, all the tranny fluid ran back into the front t-case. I think I ended up doing some gear damage to my transmission running it virtually dry and I spewed oil out the front t-case breather all over the bottom of the truck. If you have a 6cyl, make sure to check this first.

I found a pretty good tranny shop in Fife who was able to find a seal to fit. It was from a Ford Escort automatic transmision, but it worked!

Ya, I saw your emails on the 4x4NW list, thanks for the heads up. I don't think I'll have that issue though, I've got the 22RE so I'm not using the 6-4 adapter and the dual-case adapter doesn't use any seals. Isn't the output on the 6cyl trannies male, the 4cyl ones are female so I'm pretty sure they seal themselves without having to have the transfer case attached.

BTW, check your PMs, wondering about those 35s you've got "laying around"

Hey Shane,
Do ya need another DS to get it shortened? I have a rear out of an 87 4Runner. If you know what length you will need, you can get this one shortened while still running yours. You can have it if you can use it (I owe you back for the diff!! Thanks again).
