My Camping Trailer Project

Fill out the paper. Walk in, hand it to the clerk. They will ask you what you spent building it (I said $150). What is it Worth? (I Said $150).
I paid $14 and walked out with a plate and a small VIN plate that attaches to the frame. No inspection, nothing. Piece of cake.

Looking good for sure!

Thanks for the info! I plan on talking to the DMV in the next week or two, I really hope it goes better than every other time I've been there.

wish they all could be the same. i know here all you do is going in and get it inspected by a local shop and they right you a paper saying it has all lights and they work. then you take the paper into the dmv and they give you a plate

It's really hard to work on the trailer without being able to roll the thing around, so I decided to get the axle and suspension figured out before I work on anything else.
Several weeks ago I tried to order a complete axle from a shop that builds custom trailer axles and that I've heard good things about. After several calls, over a couple days, I couldn't get a hold of them and I decided to save some money and build my own.
I had a section of 2x2" 1/4" wall square tubing, and wanted to build the axle using it (while the trailer should be pretty light, I would like for the axle to take a rock hit or two without bending). After a LOT of research I found some 1 1/2" square spindles that would fit some 6x5.5 hubs.

Together the hubs have a 3500 pound rating, with the heavy wall axle tube the trailer should be able to see some moderate terrain without an issue.
First I chopped the tubing to size
I had to clearance the spindles for the welded seam inside the tubing, then beat the crap out of them on a wood block to get them seated. I left a little room to weld them without getting into the sealing surface and I covered the spindles with aluminum foil to protect the sealing surface.

Once I got the spindles welded up I got to work on the spring perches. I cut some square tubing in half, then notched it for the axle tube and welded it together.
Then I greased the bearings, installed the hubs and painted the axle.

Thanks!
Yeah, me too. I will go to the DMV in the next week or two and see what is involved. Everytime I go to the DMV I swear they are out to get me, it's always a total PITA.
Trailerpart.com, I can post the part numbers if anyone is interested. As for the pens, those are the crappy ones that suck and I don't use!

But, for the most part it was weight, diff clearance and less rotating mass. A strong trailer axle seemed like a better idea all around.
