How much has youre SAS cost you?
#62
That is a loaded question....
The problem with a SAS is that one always starts out thinking the SAS is most of the cost. Turns out once you start, it can be difficult to stop just there.
SAS usually adds lift which allows for larger tires which require a better gear ratio and might as well throw in a rear locker while your at it and a crawler sure would be nice but I am not going anywhere unless the engine runs good and I suppose it would be silly not to get some sliders and I guess a stronger bumper makes sense and now that I have this nice bumper I'd can add a winch in case I get stuck but then maybe I should install a front locker to make sure I don't get stuck but if I air down more then maybe I'll be less likely to get stuck, but then how will I air back up so I should get a CO2 system and if that fails maybe a compressor and probably a CB to keep in touch and maybe a GPS to not get lost......
Mine cost a lot... but I am not complaining. Still less than a new rig and not so bad if I get a dent or two. I am very happy with with where I can go confidently and building a rig like this with my own two hands (with a little help) has always been a dream of mine.
Just an SAS, I'd say $400 for the axle, $1,200 or so for a full kit plus labor to start.

200 for an 81 toyota pickup, robbed axle and driveshafts. 1099 for trail gear ifs eliminator. 560 for rear 5inch kit from trail gear through low range offroad, 179.00 for 10 inch spline, 220 for 35-12.5-17 used bfg all terrains. 20.00 paint, 80 for welding wire, tips, and gringding wheels. total 2118 more or less. made front driveshaft no cv. 43 degrees out of creeper joint and ifs front diff yoke, made my own and it works great no vibes at 60 and only two joints to worry about. my rig 95 4runner 3.0 v6, 5speed.

Even though I havn't started my SAS, I can say how much I've budgeted thus far in preparation for the swap.
TG 3" IFS elim kit - $1100
Local fab guy with yota tube buggy to do the work - quoted at 12 to 14 hours to complete. $300-$350 total assuming no snags.
SFA - here anywhere from $100 to $400, so for the sake of budgeting, lets just say $400.
Thats $1850 on the high end for just a straight up axle swap, no DS, no rear lift, no goodies in the axles.
A local Driveline shop here can make a pretty stout front DS for ~$200, reccomended by almost every local offroader I've met.
5.29 Gears for front and back - $280 (Just using TG's prices since I'm on their site, but of course these could vary) Not including install kit
Locker of my choice - $???
I'm up over 2k, and I haven't even gotten to upgraded axles in the front and rear, which can easily run another 1k. So I've budgeted ~$3500 to get me started, and the rest will be played as we go. I'm hoping to get started with a axle in September, but I have to decide now what I want in it to start. I'm leaning toward some sort of LSD, Dirty 30s, and 5.29s. I'm also considering a high pinion setup, but I'm still reading about the benefits of this.

Sorry to bring this thread back to life. I want to do a solid axle swap, but it's just to damn expensive, i dont want a huge rock crawler, and I dont need tons of lift. I also don't have welding or fabrication skill enough to do it
I have been on the search for a junked 84 or 85 (under 1000 dollars, still cheaper than an SAS kit plus a donor axle). If the frame and front axle are solid, I was going to swap my drivetrain and body(and 3'' body lift) and rear axle on there with some wheel spacers up front. I run 35's with just the 3 inch body lift no problems. I want to keep the body lift to do a drivetrain lift. maybe RUF and chevys in the rear if they dont give me to much lift.
Has any one out there done this? I know it seems like more work, but I have a garage to do the swap, and a second vehicle to drive while my 4runner's down.

I don't care if I get crap but I bought an 85 with a 5" TG lift, a bits and pieces rear e locker, and it was an SR5 - $1500.. Body had been crashed against a rock, so I'm working on an 88 DLX body swap..
Technically I didn't build it, but I couldn't pass it up for the price... Plus it's an 85 SR5 with cruise!
85 with 5" TG lift and rear elocker - $1500
88 body to swap - traded non running dirt bike ($500)
future 5.29's
and lock rite locker in the front
running 33's with option to run 35's and/or pull expedition trailer

Old thread bump.
Now that I'm finally SASing, I don't even know where to begin.
Lets see...1000 for a front diff,
200 for an axle
850 for high steer
900 for shocks+springs
400 in steel bits for the front links/plate for brackets, etc...
maybe 200 in consumables so far.
50 for tubing to make my front frame
add in another 200 for the driveshaft retube and lengthening.
200 for assist
I'm in it 4000 and it isn't even close to being done yet. Still have to throw on an entire front clip, plus do the rear suspension and fuel.

I'm gonna budget under 2k for my new project i'm getting this week. It already has an ifs lift so i'll sell that along with selling all the ifs stuff. I do have a 86 turbo truck already sas'd so this new 4 runner will be more of dd/hunting rig instead of crawler like the turbo. I won't need to do longfields etc right away and i'll probably keep the front open, luckily the rock crawling club I'm in has great fabricators, mechanics, and people who can set-up gears. Beer, pizza and cigs will be great bribe money.
