Does anyone of Pics or intstructions to build an exo cage for an 88 4runner. And how practical and protective are they compared to an interior roll cage

 

an exo will make tight trails a bit harder but better protect you as a whole. real strong and easier to ty into your frame. im gonna exo/int cage my 2nd gen and cut out the back window for top weight and veiw (plus im gonna smash them so might aswell sell or make into a removable top before then). as for interior cage, sheet metal is sheet metal and if you dont care then they are aslo nice and can make for a real clean look but they can also make the already small interior smaller. check out pirate4x4 not to turn you away from here but theres a ton of rigs caged over there too

 

oh by the way for overall saftey i would go exo before internal

Everybody does their exo different but the basics are sliders welded to the frame. A strong front and rear bumper should also tie in. An a pillar bar, B pillar bar, etc. You need to provide extra tubing in the roof via X's and the like so that the corners have extra reinforcement.

 

Im one of the few who have exoed a full body and kept it a full body (doors, glass...)

For the kind of trails I run, not only does it protect the body but with out it I would get stuck. One day on some of the black trails @ the Cliffs would peel off my body and the cage lets me slide along the walls and pivot around trees and even use the cage to stabilize the truck by leaning it on a tree. So its not just protection.

i have an external cage .more room on the inside and its great for attaching things.

Looks pretty good. remember to do some triangulating over the roof.

For the above mentioned reasons, an exo is great.

I have only two complaints about exo cages.

1. Out here, they aren't as needed as they are where 4rnr is. Because of this, it tends to give the driver of said exo'd rig the idea that they should drive like a jacka s s. It is extremely annoying to wheel with someone who is flopping a rig, and sticking horrendously just because they can. In tight trees and muddy areas, they seem to be necessary to wheel a truck at all. Out here, they are rock anchors.

2. No offense to anyone who has one, and this is only my personal preference, but they are the ugliest modifications one can do to a truck. I would rather have a truck that is completely wrinkled and dented with no glass. Again, just my personal taste.

 

Don't forget to ben the bar up over the hood so that your wipers can move and don't forget some 45 degree reinforcements around the bars where the windshield opening is.

 

Tastefull ones are way better than full on cages, i can understand the purpose but not every on needs it.

Generall, hood, fenders, tied into sliders and bumpers wold be my thing and along the doors, otherwise its enough. A cross at the front and back of the roof work too.

The center support helps to support the cage in the event of a rollover. Removal hardtop on a 4 door is cool...

That is So freakin sick. I barely have the rear leaf conv. done and i just added a new project. Sweet part about this is that I can put a quad in the back and go to the dunes without a trailer.

Again.. that is awesome!!!!!
