E-brake swap

to all you guys who hate the toyota e brake here's what I did. I took the e brake from a 1998 toyota 4 runner and fabricated it to fit my truck.

Red face

So How well do you like it??

Does it work better then the other handle??

I have no real problems with the the original set up just the bell cranks seizing up from sitting when people don`t use them.

i didn't have any problems with my stock set up either I just hate the set up. this way is much easier for 4x4ing and for e brake turns. I love the set up so far but havent had much time to test it out seeing as my truck isn't running at the moment (fuel pump went).

Thats a good bit of engineering you have done. I will give you props for that.

I prefer the stock setup though. Its stock, requires no cutting, works, and I can pull a good ebrake turn with it... just takes practice

Looks good, If you find a good deal on a gray 4runner console you could almost make it look completely factory. And I'm with you on preferring it this way over the dash ebrake, I never got the hang of it on any of the older Toyotas I have driven.

I have been wanting to do this for a while! How much time did it take? Could you go into more detail of how you did it? Did you also have to take brake lines from the 98 or did you just cut and attach the stock ones?

it took me an afternoon but now that I've done it once I could do it in an hour or so. I used the cable from the 98 which is much shorter than the 92 so I just made a bracket so that it pulls on the stock lever where the original cable broke into another cable to the rear axle. for the hole I just kinda eyed it up with my center console (its a 4runner center console not a pickup console, the 4runner one works better) and cut it out, I kinda wished I cut it a bit more forward but whatever. that's about it its not very difficult to do.

I'm wanting to do this to my 1st gen 4runner. I'd assume it would be pretty much the same. Thanks for the info! Ill be trying this soon if I can find a donor truck.

I used the e-brake from an old toyota van and the brake cable is thicker and less likely to break like the stock ones always do, but mine isn't routed to the stock brakes. I have mine going to the driveline brake.
