drive shaft questions about dual transfercase set-up

i have an 86' 4runner (w/ 2-3in lift) i recently did a solid axle conversion on my truck and while i had it taken appart i decided to add a transfer case, i am almost done with both projects but i still need to have my drive shafts modified. i have found a reputible and realible place to have my shafts modified, but friend with off-road mechanical experance tells me that i will need to add a dubble cardon joint to the rear shaft since it will be at a slightly steeper angle and not as long. i am on a budget and i beleve that the least expensive way to get that joint would be to find one from an 85 toyota, but if i don't need it then i probabily don't want it.

Do i need to add U joint/s to my drive shafts when i modify them?

Does the rear shaft need a dubble cardon joint when shortened for the purpose of a dual transfercase?

thank you for any help

Well i dont know much about the whole double cardan joint but from what i hear yes it smooths out the angle by splitting the total angel in two. (45 deg into 22.5 +22.5 deg on both ends of DC)

however this basically makes your driveline into 2 shafts.

i posted a link to this earlier but here it is again

Cool! Now the truth will come out with your designs. Having the parts right in front of you will really help.

so not much happened today, managed to pull the case apart and pull the interlock pin to allow for independent shift rail operation. Also got the adapter on so everything is ready to go in besides the shifter assembly

This is the begining of the milling process but i got alot further than this but i dont have any other pics. i need to finish some small details on the rear shifter assembly but other than that, that part is done.

Now the other project is to figure out the shift lever and all that stuff....

ok i know this might be a dumb question but can somebody explain to me the difference between having dual sticks and triple sticks. like what the fuction of each stick is. i am new to toyotas and am building an 85 xtra cab on 40in iroks and am fixing to put dual cases in it. i am just trying to figure out which way to go being that i still have the bench seat in it.

thanks!

3-sticks, 2-cases:
1: H-N-L front case
2: H-N-L rear case
3: 2WD-4WD

For dual sticks, depends on the setup:

w/ 1 case:
1: H-N-L
2: 2WD-4WD

w/ 2 cases:
1: H-L front case (can be 2WD H-L or 4WD H-L depending on rear case)
2: 2H-4H-N-4L rear case

4Crawler - thanks for the info! thats exactly what i was looking for. that being said i do have one more question....would having twin sticks allow me to not have to cut a hole for the rear case or would i have to get a twin stick set up (say from marlin) and either fabricate or order a set up like the one R.DesJardin makes?

again sorry if these questions are somewhat newb...but hey thats what i am.

thanks!

Well, think about it. If the shifters come out of the top of both cases, then you need 2 holes for them to pass through. 1 stick or 2 per shifter still need a hole in the floor. Move the shifters to the front case, then one hole is needed.

lawdawg21,

We've got another discussion on Toyota shift patterns regarding twin sticks that I think you'll find useful:
