problem is mine isn't safe to drive! selling as a parts only truck or parting out !!

 

a quick solution would be to find some old signposts that no one is using and rig up a frame by bolting a few together. there was a thread on that here just recently. looked pretty good... hehehe

nice truck that frame is pretty bad but it is fixable im actually doing that right now with my truck my advice is to find a frame or like i did found a backhalf of a yota frame that had been turned into a trailer and im in the process of cutting my frame off and welding this to it, i had a buddy (he drove the truck) that the frame was rusted so bad that the only thing holding the rear leaf spring mounts on was the weight of the truck the mount had rusted all the way through it, but it looks pretty bad so i could look at back halfing it, and on the welder id set it at 120 or a lil lower with a 7014 rod n give that a shot, just i would have a buddy come over n weld the sides becuase stick gets pretty messy if you never used one

 

start of right and get a replacement frame from cal mini its just the smarter thing to do

 

Well sence your a student you should take some sort of welding class and section the frame and rebuild, or get a frame from a junk yard, IFS shortbed frames are everywere, maybe you can do it for some kind of project for a automotive class in the off time, or part it out. Good luck!

 

i just fixed the frame like this on a 91 nissan 4x4 with no problem and no worry i would like to buy this truck and put it back together. oh yeah i've been a welder for 23+ years

 

get a replacement frame man! thats the best way to go!!! very nice truck to sell as "parts truck" take some time out and make it "your" truck.. replace the frame!!!!

 

I have successfully welded some patch panels on my 84's frame that has lived in MN all of its life. 1/4" is WAY too thick for welding to a frame like this. The stock frame steel thickness on these trucks is around 1/8" which should be plenty strong.

 

Well Bob, after seeing those pictures of the rusted frame on your pick-up, as a professional in the field of welding & fabrication, it can be fixed, but it's not a wise thing to do! My advise to you, even though you might not like it, is to get rid of it, & find something with a sound structured frame.

 

New frame, not necessarily.

It's going to take quite a bit if work though, and you should have a more experienced welder do the welding portion of this.

1. Sand the paint off the portion of the frame with the rot with an electric sander and medium sand paper until you get bear metal (this will help you find the rot under the paint)
2. When you have found all the rot, use a plasma cutter to cut off the bad portion of the frame
3. Find steel plating a 1/8" thick (don't forget to use your tape measure to measure how much you need), or cut off another section of another frame, maybe a parts truck?
4. Have an experienced welder with an Arc Welder weld in the section of the frame, (you may want to put steel plates over the weld just to help re-enforce it)
5. Let it cool!

PS. Just my opinion but I think you should sand the entire frame and prime it then spray it with 3 coats of rust preventative paint when you are done.
