Axle Swap

Just wanting to know if it is possible to put a Ford High Pinion Dana 60 in a 88 Yota. I know I know the pinion is on the wrong side. But I want to put a 350 in it with a 4L60E with a Atlas. Will it fit with the 2 inch body????

Might want to consider the high pinion 9" (not the Currie version as that's a 8.8 and not nearly as strong) - it's stronger than the Dana 60, less money and weighs less as well. Here's the site: http://www.truehi9.com/

I didn't say there aren't any strong ones out there, but to say its stronger than a 60... Not to mention, the 9 is a hypoid gear set. The only thing a 9" has going for it, is the support bearing for the pinion... But you normally don't get any deflection in a 60...

Nothing wrong with the Pro-rock 60 but the only thing it has over the high pinion 9" from the site I posted is WEIGHT. You probably didn't read everything on the Hi9 site or else you're a come hell or high water Dana 60 type guy. Pirate has been hashing this over for a year now and everyone who's installed it is extremely satisfied, as no one - repeat - NO ONE has been able to bust it. I'm sure someone will explode that puppy this year or next but it'll take some doing. If you want to talk to someone who's running this puppy in a very well setup CJ7 e-mail Curt at JRMFG@champpans.com or call him at his place of business - AC 715-834-7748. His CJ7 has a small block that is turning out 585 ponies with 605 pounds of torque turning 39-18.5-15 boggers. He's still trying to break his Hi9s (bragging rights) and so far only three of his buds have bit the dust trying to keep up with him - ah, they were running Dana 60's but what the hell, there's always a couple of bad manufactured cases/rings & pinions around. Here's one of the Pirate sites: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showt...9&page=1&pp=25

Due to the advantage in weight, cost and yes, strength, the newly "invented" high pinion 9" with Richmond gears should be considered by anyone wanting to upgrade. There's a couple of "competitive" rock buggies types that will be competing this year with the Hi9 as they feel it's lighter, stronger and will hold up better/longer that the Dana 60. These boys will show whether or not the Hi9 has the "right stuff" - until then, I guess we can agree to disagree about my "smoking" habits

Yes, the Hi9 sounds like a good setup, but comparing competition, to normal trail use is still 2 different beings in my opinion (we had a good discusion around the fire at the hammers about the Hi9 couple weeks back) as in comps, the rig see's short abusive attacks and trail use, more constant.. But, we never broke any 60's in either one of the 3 rigs we ran in the comps this last year, but lost a 9" (broke the pinion). Myself, I prefer the unsprung weight of a 60 (will be building a pro-rock for the nose this year) for stability in my trail rig. Then again I have battled with 9" guys, and it just turns into a roundy roundy battle. Some people like eggs, some like apples

The 9" guys you've previously "battled" with never had the pleasure of running a "true" high pinion 9" with a thrush block and Richmond gears. You won't twist off a pinion with this setup. I guess we look at this in a slightly different manner. I contend if the drivetrain can take the abuse on the comp rigs, then it will handle anything found on our trails. Most trail rigs don't need any more strength than what a well setup HP Dana 44 offers but for those who do or just use a heavy pedal hopping and bouncing around with big tires, it just makes sense to upgrade and the Hi9 is but one choice for the upgrade. I contend that the Hi9 might not be the right choice for some people but it won't take a back seat to whatever choice those other people make.

Right now Mike Qualey (He's the guy who actually started the Hi9) is in the middle of building up a Jeep Rubicon, using 31-spline Hi9's and "his" version of double Y-Links etc. He's hoping to have it complete for the Jambo, as the plans right now is for me to tow his ass out there (save on gas) and arrive a couple days early with a portable welder and plenty of spares, as we'll try and break something, anything just to test the 31-spline setup, as others have given the 35-spline setup everything they had and it's held. He's officially signed up for Jack Hammer but after stopping at his shop last week and looking at his "project", I doubt he'll be ready with it, as he only puts in a couple hours a week on it, as he has to keep busy on other jobs to pay his bills. (They jumped into the Hi9 way under financed and imo are struggling) If he's able to complete his project and attend the Jambo, he'll bring out a setup Hi9 3rd member for everyone to inspect and I think you might be impressed.
