who's running a detroit in the rear?

Who here is running a Detroit in the rear? I'm going to be geting mine soon and was wondering how it is on the road. How hard is it to get used to? I mean, is it going to get squirly around every corner? And how fast can I make turns? How much throttle can I give it in turns? I've heard Yotas aren't that bad because they don't exactly put out crazy torque and aren't too heavy. Just thought I'd ask you guys first before I made my purchase. Thanks.

I have been running mine for over 2 years now. It is by far the best offroad mod I have done. On the street it is very predictable. I dont even notice when it locks and unlocks. It stays locked most of the time. Just make sure you get the soft locker--it has an SL at the end of the part #.

Ditto to what marc said.....Forget it is even back there. My tires remind me when I make slow turns and then pour on the gas. I really don't think it affects the way it drives much at all. I got one in the front too.

hated mine- got rid of it after just a couple months...

The locker wiggle that occured w/ a manual tranny sucked- as did the clunk/bang when turning on asphalt.

It was totally UN-predictable in snow and ice, worked fine on dirt/rock trails.

I had one for a while. Didn't get rid of it cause I didn't like it. It's fine for on-road. In the corner, easy on the throttle especially when wet. I end up selling it with the 4.56 ratio and got toyota elec. locker that I regeared and converted to cable lock.
With the stick, I think you'll feel more and yes, it does twist you a little when accelerate. You'll get use to it though. You need to really watch yourself in the snow. very easy to go side way.

Well I should be getting it done soon. $525 installed. Not to bad if you ask me...

Oh, as for the Soft Locker, they said to do it they remove something from the locker. Is this right? I'm definitely going to call them again tomorrow to clarify everything. But any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

That sounds pretty cheap. Are you getting a master install kit too? I would. Your bearings from 1995 have probably seen there best days long ago. I think I paid about $125 for the install kit, $405 for the locker, and my buddy installed it for $100.

I sent you a pm with the part # for the locker.

I have one in my CJ.
It's fantastic off road.
It's totally changed the vehical on-road. Sometimes quite dangerous.
Give it throttle in a wet/icy/snowy corner and it will swap ends like now. I'll be facing oncoming traffic.
It does ratchet and make noise as it locks and unlocks on the street.

I chose the TruTrac for my street Truck. Much more predictable. First one lasted near 100kmi, I liked it so much I got another.
Turns out it wasn't really bad, just getting noisy in it's old age (who doesn't.) I killed it when I took it apart to see what was wrong. According to Dana they do final machining in the assembled state and can not be serviced.

Thanks. Yeah, I think I might get a master install kit too. I have to call them up today and finalize things. So hopefully I'll be locked in a couple days.

I think you will be happy with it. I barely notice my lockright except when im on it in a turn, then it scrubs the tires.

Well it looks like I might not be getting it... Things just aren;t working out. Apparently the place isn't doing installs this week and I leave to go back to school Sunday. Sure puts a damper on my spirits...

I had one and it worked great off road. Hated how it behaved in ice/snow so I got rid of it.

I ran one for years, fine off-road and was OK on-road when I first got it. Did not take long to get used to it, but as the time went by, I liked it less and less. It rarely banged or made noise, but it was twitchy on the road, snow and ice was not fun and anything off-camber and slippery was bad.

I now have an ARB in back and it is great. Actually, I find I hardly use it off-road, it is fun to see what you can do open.

Thanks for the replies guys. I couldn't get it done this week, so I'm just going to wait for the Aussie locker. Shoot, I'll have money for other stuff this way...
