I've been looking into this for my new winch. Check out http://www.okoffroad.com/stuff-winchrope.htm for some cheaper prices. They use Amsteel Blue line and make the lines themselves from what I gather.

A roller fairlead is not recommended since the line can get caught up between the rollers and damage it. An aluminum hawse fairlead is the preferred way to go.

I run the AmSteel Blue and love it. It is much safer then steel.

It looks like I may be doing another group buy on this stuff so if you are interested for sure let me know. The more people the cheaper it is.

definetely keep me posted on this group buy. how do the lines handle in the mud? i heard they work well in salt water, as in the water wont penetrate and ruin the line, but what about mud? will mud ruin the line and make it wear out faster?

I got the Amsteel Blue from GRNTACO on the last group buy and I have been very impressed with it. I used my original roller - no burrs - and I sanded the rollers down and rubber-coated them with Plasti-Dip and I haven't had any problems. The syn line is worlds above the steel in every aspect - especially having to handle it. No way I'll ever run anything BUT a syn line.

check out

Synthetic winch line is derived from the synthetic lines used for deep sea trawling. I can't think of a more abrasive, abusive, and muddy testing environment than that. If you've ever seen the condition of bottom trawl gear, you'd know what I mean. I spent 2-1/2 years inspecting fishing vessels in Alaska in the USCG.

That said, I've seen the condition of 5/16" line used by some of the AZ hardcore crew. After two years of more abuse than I'd ever give a winch line, the stuff was starting to show some wear. I watched a line break- it was a non-event. It just popped and dropped.

I've had the Rockstomper line on my Warn 9000 for a few years now. I had Scott make me a 90' winch rope and a 50' extension rope. This way, I don't fill up the spool as much and for long pulls, I don't need to respool that last 50' of rope.

One thing to watch is UV exposure, I noticed my line was discoloring after a few weeks of sun (top of my winch spool is exposed). I made a s/s cover for the winch spool, flips down to shade the rope and has a magnetic latch to hold it closed.

I think my old steel rope was over 25 lbs., the UHMW rope is under 8 lbs. for the 140'. And its so nice to be able to handle it without digging out the gloves.
