Sas Or Marlin Crawler!!!!

ok all, ive got my 94 toyota with ifs. i do some pretty seriouse wheeling, (as seriouse as it gets in benton city and juniper sand dunes,) what i want to know is, would you sas with lockers. or put a marlin dual crawler with lockers? gonna do one but not sure which. i use the truck everyday to get to work and school so it cant be do something like drop a 350 in it and go mudding (gas would kill me, ive got a bad @$$ 350 sitting at my house right now) anyways what would you do.

Do the Marlin with a rear locker and then do the SAS with a front locker.

Do them both or work on the Nova.

Dual cases and lockers will get you a lot farther than the SAS

Ditto. A SAS will improve your flex and will be stronger, but a Crawler and lockers kicks @ss compared to a SAS.

I think there is a missing piece of information. What type of wheeling are you doing? A real crawler is so slow that it's seldom used except for extreme situations.

The SAS will be much more advantageous over more varied terrain.

IMHO, an IFS rig with a crawler is an oxymoron. I noticed a huge improvement with my crawler primarily because I have 37" tires. With the IFS, you won't get above 35s. With 5.29 gears you can run most terrain. If you're in situations where you need a crawler, you'll need your SAS even more...

If you do mostly sand dunes wheeling, a locker(s) going to be alot more helpful than a crawler or SAS, which I think are alot more useful on rocks/off camber type stuff. I'd ditch the 94 and the NOVA, and focus on turning your 98 into a badass rig. You're spreading yourself too thin with all these vehicles. Once you've sold the other two vehicles, I'd go with the crawler/locker in the back, and SAS at some point in the future. Don't spend money just for the sake of spending money. If you're not getting stuck with the wheeling you're doing now, why bother? If you want to be cheap, just through an electric locker in back, which will allow you to get into all sorts of trouble. Put some money in the bank, 401K, whatever, buy a house. I see you post all the time about getting a Sammi for offroad only, getting a trail rig only, getting an 84 pickup, getting an 86 pickup, getting a this, getting a that, but I never actually see you get anywhere with these ideas. I'm not trying to bag on you too bad, but actions speak louder than words.....Make a plan, and follow through on it.

By the time Med responded, the original guy had already gone to D44s 5.38 gears and spooled on both ends

That's really strange- I saw this in the off-road section, and went ahead and posted, trying to figure out how I saw it show up as a current thread.....very weird...:pat:

He's probably got a full-on buggy now and is competing in rock crawling competitions....

FYI - every time someone votes on a poll, it is brought back as if it were posted to - even though the last post is old.

Thanks for the heads up on that Mike. I read this the other day, thought that I had read it before, checked the dates and thought the computer was screwing with me.

I will echo what Mad said, seems like this guy has a dozen projects going in a million different directions and even if this is old, I am not sure I heard the end of it.

yeah i have lots of projects, but none that are to courageouse right now..... ive given up on the nova, gave away the 94, bought a taco a trailer (soon) and a sammie, now the fun will begin!

my plans right now are to swap in yoter axles, a desil engine or a 4.3l chevy(leaning toward desiel) and putting 6:1 gears in the transfer case with 5.29's in the diffs, locked front and rear, and it will have a helleva cage with buckets and harnesses

ill keep you posted if any other projects submerge!!!
later

Voting against an SAS was hard!!! I think lockers and crawler gears will allow you to go more places...and keep the clutch. I would so a SAS shortly after though. Better yet, sell the nova and do SAS, crawler gears, and lockers.
