Offroad Driving Tips - Let's replace that visor card with something useful
With the help of this knowlegable group of off-roaders, I would like to make a list of offroad driving tips and print it out on a small card to replace the useless card in the 4Runner visors. It would be nice for when we let our spouses or other newbies drive our rigs, don't you think?
Here are some good tips off the top of my head:
- Make sure all occupants have the seat belts attached securely
- Always keep your thumbs on the outside of the steering wheel
- Double check to make sure the dog is secured
- Do not leave any loose items in the cab that could act as a projectile in an accident
- Use a trusted spotter (someone to guide you while driving) if necessary
- Always bring extra water, snacks, and a blanket
- Make sure the 1st aid kit is on board
- Don't gas it over all obstacles - try it slow first, especially on rocky terrain
- Use H4 when additional traction is needed
- Use L4 on steep hills and very rough terrain
- Reduce the tire air pressure (to around 12 psi) in sand and when additional traction is needed - make sure to air up the tires before running at highway speeds
- Always bring a compass and maps if you are unfamiliar with the area
On the flip side of the card we should have a smarta$$ version for boneheads we will never let drive our rigs:
- Unbuckle your seatbelt and get out of the vehicle.
- Always hold your jaw next to the hi-lift handle when jacking up the vehicle
Add to the list!

Here's a draft, low-res, jpg version:
What do folks think about having Yotatech.com on there somewhere and maybe have it on the FAQ page or something like that?

Ditto what Tom said.
Shane's is pretty funny.
transalper, I have never looked at mine very close, is it just a card that pulls out of a plastic piece on the visor and can be replaced with this one?
If you end up making a hi-res version later, I can add it to this page as a link.
If these were printed out, we'd have to size them accordingly to fit the visor.

Q: Why do you need a card?
Q: Shouldn't you have all that stuff in your truck 24/7?
Sorry for the smart comment, but the only list I make is the one to varifiy my camping trip gear, no one else drives the truck but me........including friends.
As for using all your gears in different situations.... There is only one gear I use; 4LO, the rest are for the hwy, dirt roads, or roads that do not require 4 wheel drive. The last time I used my 4HI was in a major rain storm last year.

but I think a better idea would be to not let anyone drive your truck, or at least noplace where they could damage it by not knowing what they are doing, for some reason I doubt they'll look at the card.

i was leaning toward making the smarta$$ version of the card first but thought it would be cool to have one that is more helpful than the one that comes in the visor pocket. I like Shane's version too!
I have let quite a few newbies drive my rig off road and a little card like that is helpful for some folks (my wife included).
the more people we educate about 4-wheeling the better.
