If you only hunt and cruise (and want to keep the cost down), you might want to avoid 35's.

35's open a whole bunch of other issues than just lifts. For an 85 you can get rear blocks and front springs for $300, springs all around for $500. Thats cheap as far as lifts go. With 35's you will need to re gear the truck and your looking at roughly a grand up to 4 grand to have a shop do it all for you.

Run a skinny tire and dont lift it at all. 33x9.50 BFG would fit real nice, and a 34x9.50 TSL would with either trimming or a small body lift. You would have less rolling resistance and drag with a narrow tire, too, so the gearing wouldnt seem quite as bad.

A 34x9.5 will require at least 3" of lift on an 85 and will still rub without taking a hammer to the fender wells. I know because I'm there right now. 33's might fit but I doubt it. To run 35's you are really looking at one of the 5" kits or a lot of work with a sawzall. If you still have the 4 cyl. you will have to regear and upgrade the steering for anything over 33's.

the witdth or the tire does not effect gearing, it is the height!

I ran a Q78 on a bone stock 83 with just trimming of the rear of the front fender. Ive wheeled with guys who have 34x9.50's on first gen solid axle runners with only a 2" body lift and the chrome trim cut off. Ive seen 33x9.50 BFG's on trucks with no lift, and no trimming, but im not sure if thats a size they still make or not. Look on this page, somebody else is running 34x10.50's with trimming and a small body lift.

Rim selection and tire width play just as big of a role in tire fitment as the height of the tire does.

I'm running 34x10.5s on my 91 with a 2" body lift and a tiny bit of trimming, see my thread for how much trimming was needed

I agree with 96 Runner. I'm assuming the 35's are for show, since you can hunt and cruise with a much smaller tire. In that case, the 9.50's that have been suggested won't look as aggressive. However, they will provide better traction than their wider counterparts. I don't think you will be able to stay low budget with 35's. 31 10.50's are a cheap option that look decent on a stock truck, and no mod's required.

BFG still makes the 33x9.5 size in their AT line, other than those odd sizes are mainly found in Interco tires which are all fairly aggressive.

If you really want a lift in you can use aftermarket front leafs from a Jeep YJ (87-95 Wrangler). These are fairly cheap and are an easy swap, aside from the usual lift issues.

Good luck.

If you don't mind dropping about a grand, Alcan spring packs are the way I'd go. http://www.alcanspring.com/

Lifting and '84/5 truck is a bit different than an '83 or earlier (solid axle w/ huge wheel wells) or an '86/later (IFS). I ran 33x9.50 tires and needed 3.5" spring lift:

I later had to add a 1" longer spring shackle and a 1" body lift to fit them cleanly:

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/4R_suspension.shtml

And as noted a narrow tire is easier to fit than a wider tire, it took moving the front axle forward about an inch to clear some 33x15.50 tires.
