Hey I have a friend who is willing to sell me his 6 cyl rear axle from a 92 Toy pickup. He has 4.88 gears too.

Would this axle work? I wanted to do leaf springs anyways.

What is the problem with the older axles bolting up to the driveline?

 

There shouldn't be any problems with it bolting to the driveline. If you didn't want to do the leafs right away, then just swap the third members out for now, then swap back later after doing the leaf swap.

 

So lets forget about the leafs for now...

Just the gearing part.... 3rd member... That will literally just bolt up to my current axle? Which Toy 3rd members bolt up perfectly?

 

isn't your rear axle wider than the 92 rear axle? i know the 92 is 58" WMS to WMS...

 

Well, yah mine is ~61" but, I was thinking I would just add wheel spacers....

Im just thinking about swiching out the 3rd members and keeping my axle cause I m still not sure if I'll be doing leafs or not.

 

swapping out the thirds is a dircet bolt in swap... might need to look out if there are any type of speed sensors in that housing, i dont know if toyotas have them there or not, but some axles have this as an issue

 

So your saying if you had 3 axles .... a 4cyl from a 81, a 6 cyl from a 93, and a 4 cyl from 95............ you could interchange all their 3rd members?

 

yes, they are all interchangeable. only the e-locker, t100, tacoma and tundra 3rds are different

refresh my memory, whats the difference between a 4 cyl 3rd member compared to a 6 cyl? and correct me if im wrong, but the swapping is ONLY for the rear axle correct?

The V6 diff is stronger, but not to much. Yea, I would only swap rear-to-rear and front-to-front. You might be able to do front-to-rear or rear-to-front, but I'm not sure.

Again, I would just suggest swapping the thirds, get new gears for the front third, and do a leaf swap later using the same axle that's in the Runner right now.

So when you get your stuff re-geared, is it easier to just bring the shop the third members....

This stuff I never even thought about... weird.

 

If you have the Elocker then your housing has a notch in it. You could bolt in the rear of the older runner/truck, but you'll have to seal the edge and remove a couple of studs. Not ideal, but you'll likely get away with it for a while.

If you've got the E-locker, then I would regear that one while you are doing the front, otherwise you lose your locker. I guess you coulddo the swap for a little while, until you could get your rear 3rd regeared, but again you would lose the rear locker. Not sure if that is something that I would want to do. Just my $.02

 

I believe there are some limitations to regearing an e-locker diff.

 

The toyota 4.88s won't fit, but you also get those aftermarket and they do fit.

 

nope. any V6 gearset works in an E-locker third.

a toy 4.88 third will interchange with any other 4cyl or v6 third but you can't regear it with anything other than the factory gearset. however, just by looking at the one in my garage, i can tell that it'd be a lot harder to break than an aftermarket set of 4.88s, as the pinion offset is different, allowing it to have a thin ring gear and a big, beefy pinion.
