I have a stock '94 Pick up, 3.0L, 4x4, 5 speed manual, DLX. I have 31.5 inch BF A/T (Cant tell you specifics about them) on 15" American Racing rims..

How is my truck going to handle some easy to moderate terrain? I don't want to damage it, the truck in in excellent condition body wise and the engine needs a little tune up (8mpg ).

Anyone who wants to give some basic pointers and advice, everything is welcome.

I am thinking of taking my truck to Hollister.. And if anyone wants to get a meet going let me know, I am all for it!

 

a little tune up!!!! I couldn't get 8mpg if I drove everywehre in 4LO...I'd get that engine in order before you take it out anywhere. I wheel on 31s, I used to wheel street treads, You'll get stuck alot, but you can still go places, be nice to have a winch. I don't know anything about western 4wheeling so Im not qualified to tell you much.

 

Hollister is a fun place. i would defently get a tune up before you go. you'll be supprised how far a stock toyota will get you, everytime i take mine wheelin i am more and more impressed wiht its abiltys. someone should organize another YT hollister run. the last one was a blast.

 

Yeh I dunno what is wrong. I have calculated it over and over and it comes to 7-12 mpg. I am talking about wheeling before the rain season comes. Which seams as of now, to be pretty far away.

 

Me and friend want to go after our SATS on this coming saturday. I don't think I will be able to make it, but I might. I will let everyone know when I am going, and possibly we could get a big meet going!


What is your MPG, considering we have the same engine and all???

 

16 MPG consistantly with headers, intake and a lead foot, same drive train and tires.

 

I am getting 16-18 with 32x11.50x15" tires on basicly the same truck.

 

If I got 16-18 The queen of England would be licking my ass because it would be made of money. Goddamnit. Tune up time!

 

13-15 city/wheelin 14-16 highway and thats with 4.56 gearing so i am turning ~3100 RPM at 70 and ~3400 RPM at 77ish

how can you calculate the mpg? i wanna know how mine does. thanx.

 

The next time you pump gas into it, let the pump stop when the handle valve triggers (the "click"), i.e., don't top off. Reset the trip odometer, then drive for a while. 100 miles, 150, 200... whatever.

Pump gas again, and stop pumping when it clicks. Get a receipt, climb back into the truck and write down the mileage from the trip odometer on to the receipt. DON'T FORGET TO RESET THE TRIP ODOMETER AGAIN!

When you get home, find a calculator and divide the mileage by the quantity of gas you put in (it's on the receipt, and accurate to 3 decimal places). The result is your economy in miles per gallon. For example: Trip odometer said 183 miles; you pumped 11.896 gallons, so 183/11.896 works out to 15.38 mpg.

 

Wow, I get 15 on the street and 18-20 on the highway with a 92 runner 3.0 auto, on either 35'' bfg ats or swamper tsl's bias ply. I think the larger tire is giving me better gas milage, bc im going farther and faster, at the same rpm.

 

To a point, yes... but you also have more tire in contact with the road, so there's more friction which takes more power to overcome it.

So yes, you will go farther with each revolution of the tire; but you may not be getting better mileage.

 

It should be worst than you think. contact surface isnt the problem, its the fact that the tire/rim weighs 100lbs, and isnt round (tsl) but once i get it above 40(on the speedo) I shift into OD. On stock tires I go 70 at 2800rmp. now I go like 85 at 2800rpm, if you do the math its better gas milage.

However I will say I get better HW milage on the 35" bfg ats, as aposed to the 33"tsls, for obvoius reasons. On the road its always 15-16 no matter what. unless im in 4wd

 

Keep in mind, if you arent geared, the speedo is off, which affects the tripodometer and odometer. SO you could be actually go9ing more or less miles. That will ultimately effect your real world gas mileage.

For instance I have 4.88's and 33's. That is suppose to be the correct gear choice, but it is still off a touch numerically. I believe it is close to 10 percent. SO I need o figure that in to consider my reall distance traveled. If it is really 10% off, when I travel 300 miles according to the odometer....I actually ewent 330.

 

yeah i have stock 4.88's and the truck came with 31's. that has all been taken into account. my speedo is way off, and of course my odometer is also off

 

Back to your original question - if you fix the gas-hog problem, I think you will be very impressed with the ability that truck has. In fact, it is probably far more capable than you are at this point. The BEST mod ever for any truck is driver skill improvement.

I went on a little excursion yesterday up to the summit of a local mountain. Wasn't anthing special, just a dirt trail/road. But if I cut corners I could see how the truck balanced and slid if I applied too much brake, etc. It was really fun.

And I really need my mpg improved because I spend from 50-100 dollars a week. And school is only 1 mile away, at most.
