Dharris1986's 1988 RWD pickup build/restore

So, i purchased this truck from a friend for $400. He has owned it for the last 10+ years and I've pretty much done all of the work to it. it's only a 2x4 truck, but that's what i need. i'm going to use it to run around town, trips, camping that doesn't require a 4x4, ect. i own an 05 ram 3500 4x4 and a polaris rzr so i have my 4x4 and my go fast offroad covered pretty well. i'm going to restore the interior, except buckets and a console, repaint the exterior back to factory. the truck currently has a blown up motor, so that's step one for me.

Great looking truck you have. Doing the interior is easy on these trucks. If done right, Interior paint works great on the plastic. Welcome to Yotatech.

Thanks terrys, i may see if my upholstery guy can just shave down and fill in the cracks and recover the dash pad i have now with a matching vinyl, than throw a dash mat on top of that to protect it. the right side pad is the only cracked part. I plan on replacing the vinyl flooring with carpet, and putting some better buckets than what my buddy rigged up and a good locking center console for my valuables and what not. i may end up building a good steel console if i can't find one that sits the way i want.

After i get this thing mechanically sound, i think I've decided to go ahead with fiberglass on the dash to repair the cracks (saw a thread on here the other night), than have my upholstery guy lay some vinyl over it to make it match up. heck, maybe have him wrap the piece that isn't cracked. i'm going to do a dash mat either way, but i still want it to look good under the mat. BUT, first and foremost is the engine, ain't worth a dang sitting behind the shop and the engine on a stand.

I just found your post. An 89 runner would fit, not sure about an 89 truck would or not.

The 89 box did fit, I just had to drill out the holes in the firewall for the lines and the drain. I ended up getting all of the lines, the compressor, the bracket for the compressor with a good tensioner pulley and the cooling box, all for basically free. I pulled the oem duct out of my truck and swapped it with his cooling box. Hopefully tomorrow night I'll get some time to put the motor together a bit. I got the block painted so far... Lol. Work has been crazy busy here lately.

A friend gave me this tonight, I think it's a w55. That'll be a nice addition.

I dont know the transmisions as well but I had a two wheel drive with a 4 speed and I put a 5 speed out of a Celica and it bolted right up. Best upgrade I ever did to that truck. Motor looks great.

It turned out to be a w55 transmission which is exactly what I was wanting to find. I'll get it completely sealed up and painted and ready this week. And thanks for the compliment on the motor.

The w55 transmission i got has a worn out shifter as does the original transmission in the truck. When you move the stick left to right in neutral the washer under the retainer plate pops out a little and hangs up. I can't find a used one anywhere i look so i'm going to have to import one from Australia. I found a company called Cube Speed that makes a complete short throw replacement for a supra that will work with my W55. It's going to cost me around $155 plus any duties uncle sam may want. It has a removable stick, so I'm planning on adapting my stock shifter to the short throw assembly, in the correct position so it will look basically stock, but shift much nicer, in theory anyways.

The new shifter arrived from Australia today. this thing is pretty nice! It shortens the throw considerably and looks really nice. I'm still on the fence if i wanna keep my stock lever and adapt it to the base or use the one that came with it. it has about the same bend, but is about 1 3/4" shorter than the oem.

I've still got to make a new gasket for under then new shifter, but it's going to work nicely.
