I see everyone always talking about these little compressors, but complain that it takes so long to fill up tires (30mins or so to air up) I was thinking why not go out and buy a nailing compressor? It will come with a tank or 2, the compressor on it will be more than capable of filling up your tires quickly. It comes with a pressure shut off, everything is ready to go. The compressor's may be a bit larger but not hard to tuck under a box or rear of a runner.

Anyone done this? It may be a bit more, but I dont think it would be. $150 for a compressor unit, or $60 for a compressor, $20 for a tank, $30-40 for fittings and switches.

What are people's thoughts?

 

check out the tornado (specifically tornadoIII i believe) compressors. reasonably priced, no tanks needed (unless you want to add them) and they can fill up all your tires. plus they're portable (connect to battery via jumpers, not low amperage cig lighter adapters), so that means you bring it when you want to...

 

I had a friend mention to me about Interdynamics Air Compressors. http://www.id-usa.com . I haven't used them so I can't comment on them.

But as far as cost goes (Under $70), I would think anyone would have a hard time finding something better than the Master Flow units that put out 2.54 CFM.

 

again thats more of a compressor to do pool toys and sports balls. I am thinking more along the lines of this



And then run it off a AC converter.

The compressor sells for $200 CDN and runs at 5cfm at 50psi.

 

IMO, the most cost-effective setup would be the Master Flow unit and a secondary 5 or 10 gallon air tank coupled in. I think a 5 gallon air tank would suffice, and as the pressure drops on the tank, turn on the compressor (which can run continuously for about 45 minutes) for an emergency repair.

I'm just trying to figure out whether or not the Master Flow Q-Maxx is a better compressor than the MV-50.

 

That compressor will draw so many amps that it will trip even the boldest 12V inverters out there.

your best bet is a compressor that is meant to run from 12v. something with 100% duty cycle, with a tank. fill the tank before you go on your run. you can use the compressor to fill the tank while you are depleting the tank as you fill up your tires.

 

umm..i think youre talking about the $20 cigarette lighter compressors that are for sport balls and pool toys. the tornado im referring to is HD, 100% duty cycle at 100psi (i think) 50% @ 200psi.

and you dont even want to know how much the inverter will cost you to run that piggy back 120V setup...and by the looks of it, that thing will hog up alot of room in the truck. for $200CDN, youre already well on your way to getting a viair setup, without a tank.

Wow! I think you may be on to something. There is something called a Tornado Monster Compressor. It puts out a whopping 5.2 CFM! That even beats the Master Flow Q-89 "Dually" .

If anyone has tried it I would really love to know your opinions.

 

Ok agreed, and that Tornado Monster does look pretty good. 5.2CFM is amazing for a little 12v compressor. That combined with a 5gal aux tank I think you would be able to air up very quickly. Also that Tornado compressor is only $200 aswell.

 

I did a little bit more research on that Monster model. It turns out those CFM numbers are at 0 psi (not a good indicator). I'll try to get more realistic numbers and post them later.

 

i have the master flow and i filled up 8 33x12.5 tires from around 15 to 35 in abour 20 minutes. took one minute a tire. jsut hade to move the compressor for every tire. that why it took a little longer.
