4x4 question

I have acquired a 88 van. I have got everything working on it other than the four wheel drive. Any pointers on what goes out first? Is it electric or vacuum?

22RE? Probably has the same front 4WD setup as the 4Runners and mini pickups. Look for a FSM here to troubleshoot.

What kind of 4WD system does the van have? Is it manual hubs up front, or automatic hubs or just drive flanges and the automatic differential disconnect setup?

Not uncommon for the auto hubs to not lock reliably, might pull them off and see if you can see what is wrong inside:

Or replace with manual hubs if possible:

Is the front drive shaft spinning when you put in in 4WD? How about the front CV axles?

Not sure haven't gotten that far yet. I was wondering what the known problems were. Like vacuum issues, solenoid problems, switches or just hubs.

Vans never had ADD, ever. They had the same unreliable auto locking hub setup that the 84-88 trucks had. I would look to that as the first culprit.

Btw, Wabbit, The vans never had a 22RE motor. n00b

Through 85 they used the 3YEC motor, and after they used the 4YEC motor. Same basic motor as in the forklifts toyota was building at the time.
