Offroading with 4x2
How many of you guys go offroading with a 4x2 V6? I have not been and im scared of getting stuck because of the two wheel drive and also not having enough power! Am i tooo paranoid? or will my 04 tundra be fine in the dirt and mud? how many of you guys go off roading with a 4x2?- is it bad?

sorry guys.. but i have to ask.. im still trying to learn about all the terms and mechanical stuff... but i just have to ask.. what does the winch and the lockers do?

winch is a device that you mount on the front or the rear of the vehicle and can assist you by pulling you out of a sticky situation, or pull someone else out. lockers are another added traction device in the axles of the truck.

a locker simply locks both wheels together so they turn at the same rate all the time, and get the same amount of power as the other wheel does, if you turn both wheels constanly you get more traction, and go farther, it also helps if you articulate your suspension so far a wheel lifts off the ground, normally that one wheel would spin not the one on the ground. with a locker both the wheels spin, and you can keep going.
basically what im saying, is if your gonna go offroad, get a locker, youll love yourself for it.

Pretacopower had a locker in the back of his Tacoma for the Big Bear run and surprised everyone with how well he dealt with the trails. I think he only had issues twice.
There are a good amount of people that say a Prerunner with rear lockers will do almost just as good of a job as a stock 4x4. That's pretty encouraging

Driving 2WD is a good way to rack up some experience - it'll help you drive better if/when you upgrade to 4WD.
I did see one hiccup with Pretacopower's rear-locked 2WD on the Big Bear trip. He was reversing to get into line to take a group photo and for some reason the rocks and incline was giving him a little bit of a hard time getting into place. Really weird.

Dangerous?
I heard that having lockers is pretty dangerous when it comes to street driving, while its raining?? arent your chances higher of a spin out when your turning and the road is wet? experiences anyone?

I would have to agree with WileEToyote on street driving with lockers. Also tire wear is another factor when driving on the street. A full spool locker/lincoln locker on the road will wear the tires much faster do to the outside tire wanting to turn faster than the inside tire during turns. A limited slip locker will allow the wheels to turn a different speeds so you wouldn't expect any additional wear with this type of locker. The toyota electric locker or the ARB lockers are great because you can engage or disengage them at any time.

i run a lock-right with 4:56 in my truck. the thing i like about it, is when one tire has no traction, it puts the power to the tire with the most traction. unlike a limited slip which does the opposite. i have no probs in rain, turning, nada. wears a little more, but if you rotate, and have good tires, theres no prob. i do notice it lock, and notice when i am turning with wet tires on dry pavement, it switches traction. but thats coming outta my place making a turn. love it though!!

My locker made my 2wd more capable, yes, but in the long (or short) run it made me want a 4x4 even more. Now look what I've gotten myself into

But yeah, get a locker, a nice set of AT tires, and some sandbags in the back end and you'll be going twice as many places w/out getting stuck.
