Tested the injectors' resistance today per the FSM which calls for 13.8 ohms @ 68 degrees- it's about 65 degrees and I got a consistent 13.7 for all of them.
and then I pulled them from the intake manifold.

Spray pattern evident

IIRC 96-98 got 4 hole injectors, 99+ got 2 hole injectors.

I've ordered the gasket kit from Yotashop because they come with headbolts and MLS headgaskets. I also got the seal and gasket and hoses so I can service the oil cooler and those little iac coolant hoses. KIT-1020B

96 4Runner. Decorating the driveway.
Waiting on the injectors which went out to Witch Hunter, should get them early next week.
In the meantime I cleaned up the head and found enough tiny mars to go on ahead and pull the valves and send the heads out to get cleaned up. MLS gaskets like smooth surfaces and I want to do this right because it's the first time I've done head gaskets and also I don't want to do it again.
It's been raining off and mostly on the past four days so not much otherwise has gotten done.

Boom! Heads are back and beautiful lickety split! No cracks, hooray.
Put the new valve seals in...

And the valves in one head before we ran out of time...

Which went much smoother with 4 hands than it would have with 2, so thank you to my husbandio who patiently worked with me to get all the valves out and, later, in. He also knows more about this stuff so was able to be my guide in remembering spring seats and how to stick in the keepers...stuff like that.

and he helped with head #2 this evening- all 8 million valves are in. Okay, 24.
Million.
Head gaskets are supposed to show up sometime Friday.
I'll try to work on the rest of the gasket surfaces tomorrow and I still have to deal with the engine oil cooler before the left head goes back on.
Just got a tracking number from Witch Hunter as well...everything is lining up and in order- now all I have to do is do the job correctly!
Of course starting tomorrow the temps for the next 10 days are forecast to nosedive. BRRRRRRR is gonna be happening. Might even snow on Tuesday.
Looking at the old head gasket- I'm thinking they are NOT original. As best as I could find Toyota had 3 iterations of composite head gaskets for the 5vz fe. Supposedly they added a small hole to the 2nd and 2 holes to the third versions. The later 3rd gens (01-02?) got MLS gaskets.
Anyway, the gaskets on my truck had 2 holes. That means that while they have at least 200,000 miles on them they have less than 300,000. I've had the truck since '05.

So my head gaskets came last night.
This morning I woke up to 17 degrees (w/our humidity= feels like 8 degrees)
and this:

The injectors should be back today, looking forward to seeing the Witch Hunter report out of curiosity. Not expecting anything too off based on how the truck ran and the pattern evident on the intake manifold and on the injectors themselves. Still, curious.

For some reason, I thought your 4Runner was blue.....
The new "snow like" texture does look good though!
I thought the 29 degrees from yesterday morning was cold, and we didn't even have any snow.
It is time for a cup of coffee, or tea. I am not sure which today.

The sun came out and melted enough snow off the hood so I pulled the engine oil cooler off the right side of the block. It was really stuck on, the gasket is rock hard and split apart, leaving some on the block. Took a bit to coax the remainder off the cooler itself.
Coolant will need to be drained and the two hoses removed. I didn't drain the oil and lost only a little that the drain pan caught. Coolant will also come out of the cooler when it's removed.
24mm for the bolt in the center of the cooler. I had to use a wrench with a second wrench for leverage- the bolt was really on there. Would have used a socket/ breaker bar but I don't have a short 24mm and space is tight.
To get the oil cooler off carefully pry from behind the cooler where there is a gap between engine and block. I had to use my long crowbar, stuck it in the gap wiggled back and forth in a few places before the cooler popped off.
The lip for prying is where the dirt is, this is the back of the cooler. You can also see the key that helps you put it back on correctly- at the top of the picture- and the two hose nipples.

Some of the gasket stayed here:

and the rest was a very brittle, very hard mess

Another pic of the cooler showing the key...it will be on the right-hand side as you're facing it when re-installed

I used a kit from Yotashop because I was ordering stuff from them anyway. KIT-1036B

Torque for bolt looks to be 43 ft lbs

My injectors came back from Witch Hunter and the report is as expected which I like because I suspected they were okay because of truck performance (back when it was running and all that) and maybe a little dirty (because 23 years old next month).

They put new bits and pieces on them and sent back the old in a baggie. Seals, screens, o-rings...that sort of thing.

Annnnd more snow...

So I spent time indoors with the intake manifold. Getting it ready for the injectors and cleaning up the gasket surfaces and removing a lot of dirt.

the injector seats had lots of dirt down in there

NO FAIR....my area usually doesn't see anything until several weeks from now annnnd snow's back in the forecast for 1-3" (!) tomorrow night!!!
It's also unusually cold at 28 degrees right now- feels like 20, it's a humid cold.
Supposed to be 49 and sunny on Friday, that's the soonest it'll be out of the 30's. I want to put the heads back on then- just have to get out before then to finish cleaning up the block gasket surfaces. I'm hoping the rest of the snow on the hood melts off, then will try to remember to cover it in plastic before tomorrow night so I can pull the new snow off the truck plastic and all on Thursday. Maybe.
AGREED!
A couple of gratuitous pics...oil cooler re-installed

And it looks like I'll be able to use my timing belt tensioner tool without removing the lower cover. Glad to see that, I won't have to unbolt the a/c compressor to get to the tensioner itself, either.
Hole where the 3mm pin goes after the tensioner is compressed.

And current conditions just for you, dropzone.

I've also ordered the 6 fuel rail o-rings, the little and big fuel lines and the vacuum hoses that all go to the intake manifold. Almost 23 years, I figure it's not a horrible idea to go ahead and replace them while it's convenient.
RIP and in memory of mightymouse's burnt-up little white pick-up.

Dear Mother Nature,
Please stop waving your happy little single digit hellos at me. I'm really trying to get something done here.
Also, it is the wrong time of year for us to get snow days. Please visit during normal business hours.
Thank you.

Still aiming for heads install on Friday or even Saturday. Forecast temp is now in the mid to upper 40's for those days, but so long as I can shovel out a spot to stand and keep the snow off the hood I am still hopeful.

This is Missouri. Nothing is solid about MO weather until it has actually happened. Could get nothing, a dusting, 20 feet.
Okay, maybe not 20 feet.
Cold feet, though.
Definitely cold feet.
