Dirtco's 1999 4Runner Build-Up Thread

4x4YOTA, The BL is pretty easy to install, takes about 1.5 hours.

So do I, they really make the 4Runner stand out.
The two replacement wheels showed up last Friday, the first day of the Colorado Toyota Jamboree. I got them mounted and balanced, then headed to camp Friday night. The 5.29's and 35's work great together, both on the road and the trail. I plan on going into more detail later, but it did fine at highway speeds and it really pulls when taking off from a stop.

dirtco: here's how i made my corner lenses into blinkers, while retaining parking light functionality. easy project, and should cost less than $20

Thanks, I had a great time hanging out at camp and wheeling with you! Let me know when your ready to get out on the trail again.

Those are from the bro-in-lawish, he's 5...
I had a great time too. Cara had a great time and wants to wheel her own Jeep next time. Which is cool, cause I just picked this up:

I'm not clearing the 35's yet, they fit, work fine on the street and mild trails but once I got into some harder stuff they did rub. The problem was the rear tires, but I knew that they would rub. I'll go more into detail later.
It was easy. It only took a couple hours and I was alone, taking my time. I bought it from Toytec.

He's got a 1" BL, but it's still awesome! He mentioned it earlier in the thread, but you can see the gap in his rear fender well in some of the pics. 35s without a body lift requires a lot more cutting and a full tub in the front. I know because I have basically the same amount of lift and 35s on the way so I've been lurking over his build to see how far he goes with his cutting and pounding.

Thanks! I only got about 2 1/4" of lift in the front, and maybe 3 1/2" in the rear (I would have to double check my notes at work to tell you exact numbers), then add the 1" body lift on top of that. My 4Runner is a 99' so maybe my numbers are off a little, they did sit a little taller from the factory. I know once I add all my stuff (skid plates, bumpers, winch, CO2 tank, tools, etc) it's going to come down even more, but I like the stance and feeling of a low rig.

I can always step up to a 1 1/2 or 2 inch body lift if I have to. I'm really trying to find that perfect combination of suspension lift, suspension travel, body lift and minimal trimming that will clear 35's, ride nice, and keep a low COG (for a 3rd Gen). I'll keep you updated.

I'll make it work, one way or another!

A little more progress! I installed my transmission cooler and I bypassed the stock cooler to avoid the strawberry milkshake syndrome. Overall it was a very easy upgrade but it has made a big difference in the transmission temps. The transmission still gets a little warm if I’m pulling a hill in OD, but if I back out of it a little and turn the OD off the temp drops right away. It still runs a LOT cooler than it did with out the cooler.

I trimmed down the stock cooler line and capped off the stock cooler, if the stock cooler fails I don’t want to lose my coolant and overheat the engine.

I also got my Inchworm E-Locker guard in and installed, it has been on back order since May.

I’ve taken the 4Runner on a couple easy dirt roads, along with a moderate mountain trail that really didn’t flex the 4Runner out. So I went to a local trail that’s easy, but has one spot that flexes your vehicle out pretty good.
A couple pictures along the way

Then I flexed it out

I still have both of my sway bars installed. I drove around for a while without the front sway bar and it was a little scary. I want to cruise down the highway at 75 mph, so left the sway bars installed. I would like to make some disconnects for them down the road.
The e-locker skid comes powder coated that color from Inchworm, it would look right at home on your rig!

So far the front clears fine, no rubbing on the body. The tires do rub the frame a little when I'm turned all the way, but I knew that was going to happen and it's not going to hurt anything.
As for the rear, it rubs like crazy!

I need to do some trimming, but I also think I'm going to have to step up to a larger body lift. Once I get my skidplates, bumpers, sliders and misc wheeling gear in the back it will set even lower. The tire is also at 30 psi, once I air down it will get shorter but it will also get wider. The width is the main problem. I don't mind trimming the lip out of the inside of the fender but I really don't want to hack the entire fender up.
As you can see in this picture the bumpstop is just starting to to touch, but it will compress a bit.

And in this picture you can see how much of the shock shaft has not been used (look at the dirt and water marks towards the top)
