XREAS damaged ??

Hey guys. I'm wondering how I would know if some fluid coming out of the rear shocks is due to the XREAS system or something else? My truck handles decently, but sways from side to side a LOT when cornering and when going over a bump of any size it sounds horrible. I first noticed the leaking fluid after having driven with the NE lift and re-locs for about a week. I assumed the fluid/grease was just a normal lubrication.

Is there a way I can tell for certain before taking it in?

how about removing the bottom of the rear shock and see if you can just compress it with your hand. if that's the case your xreas is shot.

$$ to fix. sorry

Everyone I trust said the NE relocs were a bad idea and obviously by someone who does not understand suspensions.
Blown xreas system was a result that was warned about, I believe, multiple times.

I am not a mechanic, but per toyota's website the xreas system is a gas/hydraulic system that "borrows fluid" from one shock transferring the fluid to the cross-linked shock.

So my guess would be that if there is any fluid leaks from anywhere in the pressurized system it would create problems. But without knowing if it is a gas shock linked with a hydraulic system... Does anyone know for sure?

If you could post some pics or describe exactly where the fluid is coming from, someone could give you a better answer.

Good luck, keep us posted.

i'm pretty certain she's dry on the fluids and all shocks are gone.

the fluid seems to be coming from where the top and bottom of the shock meet. i suppose it could just be lube or fluid from the top part coming over the bottom part and then re-extending and leaving some grease there.

I'm not busting your chops Tracy. The consumer isn't to blame for NE's deception and incompetence.
Andries knows a bit about the Xreas system, ask him and see if you can work a plan of attack to come to a resolution.

i bust my own chops lots, so i wouldn't blame you if you busted them too! anyway, yeah, i have to have an inspection done soon as well as an alignment and if i ever receive the grade 5 studs, then i'll need to have someone install them ... so i have a trip to the dealership coming up in a few weeks anyway. guess i'll know for sure then.

kinda drives crappily though. and it's strange because the front shocks seem okay ...

I agree that was uncalled for.

nah, it's okay, and very much true. people said over and over again that the re-locs were a bad idea and were just trouble waiting to happen. unfortunately with the amount of lift i had, i needed them badly enough that i couldn't get away without using them.

so, ah well.

upward and onward, i suppose.

Well if you do have a leak in the system, it will only effect one front and one rear shock on opposite sides. All four shocks are not linked together. One front linked to the opposite rear on each side. So there is actually 2 separate systems.

IMHO I think this could cause the driving problems you are experiencing.

the place where I get inspections doesn't look at suspension components. what's the deal with that?

yeah, mine doesn't either - i guess i was just saying that i have a lot of reasons to get my truck all fixed and checked out soon - whether for the inspection, for the alignment, or just for peace of mind.
