Wondering...

Hi

I just recently bought an 03 v8 4-runner. My old car used to be stick shift, and i was loving it...The 4 runnner is automatic - which is nice - but I still sometimes get that feeling where i want to shift my own gears..... Now im not too knowledgable when it comes to cars just yet (to be honest i know very little), and i was wondering, will anything get screwed up in the car if i were to be shifting my own gears w/ the automatic transmission? You know how its got the 2, 3, 4 and all that? Just shifting through those, i wanted to knwo if anything will get screwed up, or if its bad for anything in the car etc...basicly will it have a negative effect on it

thanks alot

If you're talking about easing up on the gas pedal and then pressing down again when you feel it's time to shift...
don't.

We had to rebuild a transmission in our Camry because of that.

By the way, welcome

Let the vehicle shift for you, that is what it was designed to do. By the way, welcome to Yotatech.

Shift all you want. I used to "power shift" my 98 Tacoma V6 Auto, bounce it off the rev limiter, etc. There is nothing you could do driving normally, that I didnt do on purpose that would hurt your '03. Trust me. Shift away man!

Thanks for the welcome and help everyone...but heres the thing now: one person says its fine, 2 say dont lol

Like when/if i shift (dont want to do it till i know its safe), i would release the gas completely then shift, then go back on the gas (on the 4 runner), that will still screw things up right? Like i wont be red lining it or anything, just regular driving only shifting myself lol

I understand what you're talking about now.
You mean starting with the gear shift in "L" then moving to "2" then "D", right?

I was under the impression that you were just talking about the accelerator. We used to have a Camry and while I was driving I'd anticipate the gear change during acceleration - then I'd ease up on the accelerator and press down again. In essence it kind of turned the transmission into a semi-manual.

It led to a transmission rebuild down the road though :pat:

You are not going to hurt the transmission by shifting an auto manually.

The tranny is computer controlled and the computer won't let you mess up anything by shifting too soon, too late, etc. You may run into some problems down the road since the shift linkage is not designed to be moved with every shift. Some of the internal seals may also be subject to failure if you constantly put them under higher fluid pressure than they normally would encounter.
(p.s. I know the feeling)

I beg to differ. In my 98 Tacoma I could drive down the road bouncing off the rev-limiter all day if I wanted too. Eventually something would break doing that.

Not sure about the 03's though.

Manually shifting and Auto

This will cause no problems at all with this vehicle. Thus the reason they have rev limiters as stated before. As for the seals in the transmission I doubt that they would be uder any more stress than someone towing a boat or trailer in each gear. The new 4-Runners are "drive by wire" anyhow so the computer won't let you do anything dangerous to the tranny. Do what you want to on this one, for 38K you should be able to.

The guy is here with a legitimate question, I'm a bit curious about the answer myself.
There's no need to be huffy

No huffiness here. Just have no clue why anyone would want to do that...
