I was looking at toyota's website and the new 4runner engine they say makes 270 hp. But if you look at the Tundra / Sequia they are making 282hp.
I just don't understand why take the same engine and take it down to 270hp.
Just like with my '03 4runner they say it makes 235hp, but then they have the v6 engine making 245hp. I know that the v8 has a lot more torque then the v6, but it sort of pisses me off that the hp is lower. Does the new (vvt) on the v8 engine make that much difference to bring the hp up 35hp?

 

the bigger trucks are allowed to put more emissions out, the smaller trucks arent allowed as much emissions, so they tune it down to fit into parameters

 

There are also sometimes reasons like the available transmission or axle needs protected. (So they think...) A good current example is the Cummins deisels in the pickups. That engine can produce a whale of a bunch more power, quite easily. People using after market computers (and even injectors and fuel pumps) to boost the power frequently find that when they pull their trailer they blow up the other drivetrain parts...

 

If Toyota is anything like Nissan then their just numbers and mean nothin, the 270hp V8 has the same rating as the Tundra and Sequoias with 282 but Toyota just puts down 270, we will only know if someone dynos the 2 vehicles and the numbers match.

Im willing to bet if their is an actual different then it's something small like a more restrictive exhaust.

Has anyone here ever compared the 190hp Tacoma to the 184hp 3rd Gen V6 4Runner, always wondered why the 4Runner did not just have 190 like the Taco or was it just lower numbers on paper

 

Seems like I read somewhere it was due to differences in the exhaust or muffler.

I'd have to agree; all of the Tacomas and V6 Tundras I've heard have a deeper exhaust note than the 4Runners.

 

I've wondered about this myself. I think the tone of the trd tacos are much better than the 4runners.

 

I think Toyota may be fudging the numbers on the 4Runner to make it look like it makes less power (Chev does this). If you look on Toyota's website, the new 4Runner can tow more than the Tundra's

Good observation, however towing capacity is also based on the vehicles weight. The tundra obviously is heavier so it gives up some of the weight to itself than to what it can pull.
