Whine of engine drowns out deck plate noise

I installed a deck plate a few days ago and am very pleased with the results, other than the fact that I cant hear the throaty intake sound I was hoping for. I believe this is because of loud whistle/whine from my 5VZ-FE. This whine is not the sound of a supercharger, unfortunately. Can anyone tell me what it is, and how I can cure it, or at least reduce it. I dont believe I am the only one experiencing this, as I have heard other tacomas that soudn the same way. It seems like it only occurs in those with a manual transmission. Any ideas?

Well mine was whining pretty damn loud and it was my alternator, the bearings were toast on it, you could be having the same problem. I got it rebuilt and its really quiet now you cant even here a whine and I can hear my deckplate. I also have a 3.4 manual tranny.

Click on this link (R click save as) and listen to my rig going down the road. Hear the gear whine? Is that what you are talking about?

It could very well be either of the two. It does sound qiuet a bit like that sound clip, but from inside the truck, it sounds like its coming more from the engine than the rear end. I guess the only way to be sure is to have someone ride in the bed and listen for it. What does it cost to have an alternator rebuilt? If it is the rear end, is there a fix for it? Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys. If you think of anything else, let me know.

If you haven't done the ISR mod, that will definately give you that throaty sound you are talking about, esp with the deckplate.

BTW, sounds pretty good Christian!

Hey thanks Jamie. That was just partial throttle. I would also like to do a run at WOT and run it through the gears. I think in addition to exhaust sounds, we should have sound clips of deckplate open, ISR+deckplate, elbow only, stock, etc.

I love vids and sound clips!

Now, which one of the SC'd guys wants to do that too?

Very cool idea. Maybe they could host the clips on the site if they are't too big.

96 Runner, I would have to agree that your truck does sound great. When driving, does it sound like that whine is coming from your rear end? If so, I must have a different problem because mine sounds like it is coming from my engine.

No, it comes from just in front of me, under the vehicle.

Someone over on customtacos.com suggested that I switch to Lucas gear oil and that it would help take care of the problem, so I might just have to do that, now that is seems like the rear end could be the problem. Im also going to do the ISR mod as well. I have one question though. Which 2 hoses am I connecting to the intake piping. According to 96 Runner's write up, its the power steering vacuum line and the FPR line. Would this be the same on my 98 5vz-fe? Is it the power steering vacuum line that is connected to the ISR originally? I appreciate the help.

How many miles are on the truck and have you replaced the rear diff fluid at all? I viewed an earlier post that you thought it was coming from the engine vs the rear of the vehicle.

It depends on how many lines are connected to the big silencer right now. However many are connected currently, that is the amount you need to connect to barbed fittings.

Blink: It does sound like it is coming from the engine, but quite a few people have said that the rear end could be the problem, so I figure that since the suggested fix is as simple as changing the gear oil, I might as well try it. Even if it doesnt solve the problem, I can at least cross that off the list of possible causes. Ive got 90k miles on the truck, and have never changed the gear oil, so even if this wont solve the problem, I would say that it is definitely due for a change.

96 runner: There appears to be only one line running to the silencer box.
