What does Supercharger Ping sound like?

Hello everyone,

Im new and honored to be a part of such a large community. Anyways, I just installed a Supercharger on my 2004 Dbl Tacoma and seems like everything is fine until today.

Theres a small rattle, staticy noise comming from my engine when im LR/HG about 2 to 2.5k rpm. Im not sure if its ping or not because it doesn't seem to affect my performance, and the truck continues as normal. The sound is very very very quiet, and comes at such a quick pace that it sounds almost like radio static or hum. Also sounds like gears rattling, such as in the supercharger, but then that doesn't make sense underload.

Can someone who had heard pinging before discribe to me how it sounds?

yup... sounds like ping to me. it sounds kinda like marbles in a soup can being rattled slightly under the hood. it's usually louder as it gets more violent. any ping is VERY bad. are you running 93 octane?

Man its so quiet you can bearly hear it, but thats what i was afraid of... It is when i am in HG/LR, and part throttle. Does the 7th injector solve it? I know the URD is made to solve this problem, but i'd like to stay with toyota parts for as long as possible. I figure lowering the temp of the post supercharger air from 200 degree with the fuel injection will help out a lot.

I you haven't already, head over to Gadget's site and take your reading glasses. His site should answer any of your questions.

Yea I think I read every article there, its just i was not exactly sure if that was a ping. Sounded very close to valve noise, very inaudable, and quiet. I just thought a ping was more loud, or disturbing. Anyways, gadget didn't really say much about the 7th injector kit. It seems that its made to correct this problem?

I believe it is made to correct that. But I think that TRD claims added hp also, sounds better than saying "to fix the ping."

Read here: YotaTech
There's been lots of good discussion about the 7th injector both here and on TTORA.

Pinging sounds like gravel in the wheel well. You can have pinging and not hear it at all. If you can hear it then it's pretty bad.
I assume you have nothing to measure how the motor is running... Get a wideband a/f and/or an EGT.
You can try using a higher octane fuel, or mix toluene with your fuel to raise the octane.
good luck

From an engineering standpoint I think Gadget's kit does a better job of rectifying the problem than the 7th injector does. TRD is also not actually made by Toyota either, they are a separate company which partners with Toyota on aftermarket parts for their vehicles. In this case I think Gadget did the R&D better than they did. Don't get me wrong, the 7th injector works fine and many have used it, but I think Gadget's design is superior for whatever that's worth.

When I spoke with the TRD rep he told me the 7th injector was not designed to solve the pinging problem, it was designed to add hp/tq.

The 7th dumps in a bunch of fuel and makes your AFR too rich. If you get the 7th injector you need to get the URD Additional injector controller. Then you can tune it and get it running right.

I had a bad pinging problem until I changed my spark plugs. The pinging almost stopped after I changed them. It would occasionally ping, but not as often and not as loud. I haven't heard any pinging since I added the 7th and URD AIC.

Thanks for all the help everyone, even the smarty response lol. I just want to keep my car as close to "genuine" toyota parts, although i know they outsource everything. The URD kit seems like too many modifications such as injectors and what not.

Did you go with cooler Iridium plugs, the label on the hood asks for double prong plugs. Which ones did you use?

I used the IK20's which is one step colder gapped to .032. I know a lot of people with s/c engines use 2 step colder plugs.
