I think he said it was cranking Jim but wasn't actually firing. I just changed my starter contacts because mine wouldn't crank but click alot. Then for some reason on the day I was going to change the contacts it just cranked and cranked but would not hit so I called my dad who used to own a toy and he told me to check the dist. cap and rotary button...said the same thing happened to him. Then after sitting for about 15 minutes it fired.

Fuel pump test jumper is a really good way to see if it is the fuel pump coming on or not:

mine did the same thing would not crank, wait for a few minutes and then fire up. my problem was the windings in the pick-up coil in the distributor. windings carried a weak current. replaced the pick-up coil in the distributor and fires right up and run flawlessly. my .02

Like mine is in the shop right now, thursday morning i went to crank my truck to go get some gas cause i was low and it cranked for about 2 seconds and sputtered and died and i sprayed fuel injection starter fluid in it and put some gas in it but it would turn over but only for a few seconds so we took it to the mechanic and he said my fuel pump is shot because he said he could not even hear or see if it was coming on. So he is replacing it this week i'll let ya'll know when i get it out of the shop.

I assume the mechanic is aware that the fuel pump will only run if the engine is running or if the starter is cranking over. Unless you put in the fuel pump test jumper, you will never hear it running with the iginition on.

I think its my ignator coil because it only gives one spark and one spark only, i think it suppose to give off a lot of sparks. It can't be the starter because everything cranks and because everything spins.

Next time it won't start, remove the fuel cap and try it again. It almost sounds like negative pressure in the fuel tank combined with some other weak fuel delivery component.

See Technical Article #23 at: http://autoshop101.com/

In short, it is what makes the high voltage for the spark plugs.

Last night my car did not start again. So i had to leave it at work and walk home. (which comletly sucked). I took my moms car and went back to start my car at 7 am this morning and it started like no other. At about 12 it did not start again... i went to a mechanic and he told me to check the fuel pump relay... he said it was going to be in the engine compartment. I did not find the fuel pump relay and looked in the repair manual it said that only 1993 models and higher have the relay. I cheked my spark from the coil and there is basically no spark or there is a very weak spark... and only one spark happens and dies, there are no line of sparks. In about an 1 hour i tried starting it in park.. nothing... put it to neutral it starts. This was odd cause last time my car did not start i tried putting it in neutral and it still did not start. Does anyone know what can be causing this? Is it some kind of relay? Is there a bad relay that makes the spark go to my coil??? Any help will be apritiated. Thanks in advance

Just a thought... Mine will do the same thing from time to time. By accident, (and I think someone on here mentioned it also) I found that a wire harness that goes to the distributor seems to be faulty. When It wont start, I pop the hood, jiggle this set of wires, close the hood and it starts right up no problem. Worth looking into.

Had the same exact prob. (I think) It also turned out to be a bad distributor wire. I changed the distributor and didn't have a problem like that again.

Instead of replacing the whole distributor, just replace the signal generator. I'm sure that's the wire that they're refering to.

Is that the wire that goes from the coil to the disturbitor cap?

No. Its not the large center cap wire. Its a set of 4 or 5 wires bundled together that goes from the base of the distributor to a wire harness.
