Weird Jerk/Thump 04 Tacoma.

My step dad has an 04 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 3.4 Auto.

And ever since he bought it about a year ago its always had this weird jerk/jolt.

The truck runs and drives fine and all except for this one slight issue.

(Remember its an automatic)

When coming to a complete stop at a light or stop sign.... its really weird.

Right as you are about to stop when removing your foot off the brake real fast theres a jolt/jerk that seems to come from the rear end off then truck.

Or sometimes when you come to a light or a stop it will stop fine with no jerk/jolt but as soon as you let off the brake to take off its jerk/jolts and kinda shakes a second.

It happens pretty much 80% of all stops... its kind of annoying and i feel as though it could be an issue later on.

I've crawled all under and shook everything down.

Drive shaft, U-joints, and center support bearing tight, rear end has hardly any play. Trans and motor mounts good.

My suspisions are pointed toward the leaf springs. But its a really weird prob i've never seen before and i really need some professional opinions.

However i strongly believe its the leaf springs. Do the springs on these trucks seem to have issues like the later model tacomas?

I havent had this problem but have read about it quite a bit on several Toyota forums. Do a search for axle wrap.

Does it have rear drum brakes? Might want to look in there and see if something is sticking or otherwise not working right.

I have seen several do this, try greasing the slip joint on rear shaft, could be binding when expanding at wheel lock, the irony is an over lubbed shaft will do the same so dont shoot it until it expands, I usually hit 10 pumps with hand gun and drive it for a few miles doing slighlt aggrerssive stops, if it gets better shoot it again in 500 or so miles and with evey other oil change, certianly can be a cheap fix for a very irratating concern.

your cables must be too tight- try loosening the accelerator cable and the cruise control cable...

to see the parts- check this

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-ge...onse-free.html
but the instructions is reverse as the guys tried to tighten them a bit to improve acceleration...someone possibly overtightened your cables....worth a try.

sorry i have not been replying on my own post >_<.

I did try to grease the slip yoke a long time ago. The was the very first thing i thought it was. I didnt put much grease in it because the gun i had kinda was crappy. but i may try again to see since i bought meh a new gun.

Thing rear brake drag may be the cause? Didn't think about that... Seems odd...

The cable thing would be possible but it doesnt happen when you give it gas or take off... Its right when you stop or let off the brake from the stop.

So i searched "axle wrap" and thats the very second thing i thought it felt like was the leaf springs.... What could cause this axle wrap? Or is it something that is there all the time and the suspension is supose to comensate for it?

I did notice that the tacomas have an oddly shaped leaf spring. Its kinda "bowed" up toward the front.

have you greased the shaft? please try this as i am seeing more and more. in fact i fixed 1 today and 1 yesterday. the springs are slightly bowed, they say it kinda smooths ride. also is it a trd model? there is a tsb for rough ride on that truck that will replace the rear leaf springs if the truck fits in the vin range

Lube u-joints and slip yokes, if problem comes back soon change u-joints. Ensure your rear brakes are working fine and your leaf spring have not been thrashed.

Rear drums? A leaky rear axel seal or drum brake sticking (saying this as my brakes have done this after getting them fixed from leaky axel seal)

Usually the fix was to put an AAL in there. Axle wrap is caused by weakened leaf springs. How many leaf springs are in the pack? How "leveled" out are they? Does he haul weight on a regular basis? I know a lot of guys in other forums have had this problem and most if not all were fixed with the AAL.

I had the same issue. For me it was the rear drum brakes sticking. I took them apart, cleaned everything up and put a little dab of grease on the backing plate where the brake shoes touch and lubed the adjuster wheel.

Kiro-- Never happens in neutral does it? Only when coming to a stop(usually a fast stop). It's worst when the ac is on? A slow, controlled stop in gear it does not do it.
I seemed to have fixed the issue by installing an antiwrap bar.
