I am looking to buy a 4runner that i can turn into my off road toy. i was specifically looking for a first gen, but they are getting hard to find in even decent condition. I am wondering how much more the second gens weigh and if at all, what impact the changes from 1rst to 2nd gen would have on 4x4ing capabilities. thanks for your help

 

Weight difference is not a significant factor in off road ability. (An H1 weighs 8000 lbs and it's generally considered formiddable off road...)

These found on the net;

1985 4Runner = 3650 lbs
1986 4Runner = 3800 lbs
1990 4Runner = 3920/3960 lbs (2dr/4dr)
1997 4Runner = 3895 lbs
2005 4Runner = 4515 lbs

All depends on engine/trans choices, and where you look for specs on the older ones. Sources don't seem to be able to agree on weights.

 

My 2nd Gen (94) w/ 3.0 A/T 32" BFG Muds and open diffs was pretty hard to beat offroad for a stock vehicle.

 

i second that, the jeep guys i go out with are mostly running bigger tires, some have lifts and a couple have lockers and there are 3 rubi's. other than the rubi's, if they all were to go back to stock configuration my yota would take them hands down. as it is now, my toyo tires are pretty much worn and are the main thing holding me up. that should be rectified in a couple weeks. destination mt's on order!!

Funny, I just got mine weighed and the guy said 4800lbs. Subtract 150 for me, 75 for a chair in the back and 50 for my sliders ( I'm guessing the sliders weigh 50lbs more than the stock running boards) and that comes out to 4525 lbs.



Edit: and I don't have my tool box and hilift on right now so that's not it either. I figure my rear bumper weighs pretty close to the stock bumper plus a hitch.

 

Holycrap, that's high. My '85 weighed 3850-3900 ish with all my gear and winch etc. not incl me. There's a scale thats alway on that I drive by a lot, so I weighed it a time or 3.

Those numbers for 90 and newer came from actual Toyota specs.

 

No wonder I'm so slow!

Actually, it makes me wonder whether the guy was right because I can't think of anything that would account for 600lbs.
