what years rear bumpers fit 1988 pickups?
Hi guys, I was just wondering what years rear bumpers will fit my 1988. I want to eventually buy an ARB or TJM bumper or have the local tech school make me one but for now I need to find a good replacement. I have the stock chrome bumper now but both sides are mashed back and it really looks like crap, since I just shelled out the $$ for a new fiberglass bed I think a new bumper is in order! I really was wondering if the 89-95 rears will fit mainly because I dont want to have the plastic end caps any more! If any one knows if they are a direct swap let me know! OR if any one knows where I can find a real rear bumper and or a cheap trailer hitch let me know, they dont need to be in good cosmetic shape, there is a powder coater near my house, , let me know Ill take it too! Thanks again, Matt OH and the search feature seems to be hosed up right now, advanced or basic kept throwing back some odd error!

84-88 for sure.
Measure the width of the frame rails on yours and an 89-95 and see how close it is. They are always different part numbers, but then bumper brackets are easy to modify.

Would you happen to know if a class III hitch for an 87 4runner would fit my 86. I havent found an 87 to measure but would think they would be the same.

I have 90-95 bumper on my 87 Truck. I didn't put it on it was on there when I bought the truck. It looks as though they welded part of the bumper bracket on the left side. I'm not sure why.

ti should fit fine... the trucks and 4runners from the 84-88 model years were the same

whoops need to carify that a little bit.... the runners from 84-88 are the same and the pickups from 84-88 are the same, the bumpers themselves arent interchangeable because the runners mount to the body and the trucks mount to the frame

The rear frame rails on my '90 are 41" apart if that helps. The rear frame on 84-88 pickups are the same, and 84-89 4Runners are the same, so SoCal that 87 bumper would fit your 86 just fine.
Jim - not all early 4Runner bumpers bolted to the body. The HD step bumpers bolted to the frame same as pickups, but the rear frame looks different from a pickup and I don't think they'd interchange. They'd look wrong anyway.

ILoveMountains - why would you even consider a replacement with the one with the plastic end caps? Those were the standard light duty bumpers. Check eBay - get a sturdier replacement. They run the Fey type all the time on there. The Fey was the optional bumper and very strong. And no plastic.

rear bumper
I didnt think the 89-95 rears had the plastic end caps like mine does! I am looking into having one built but after spending the $$ on the new bed my truck funds are gone! I really dont like the way the heavy duty step style bumpers look, I would rather use my bent up POS and wait to buy a real rear bumper! I just cant see why they cost so much! I mean $500-$800 for a bumper is alot of $$. Thanks for the help with this, I am going to hit the local bone yard this week and see if they happen to have anything better than stock. They had an ARB front but it was welded on! I was PISSED. Anyway if anyone has a bumper that will fit my 88 let me know or if you see any on Ebay or anywhere else. Thanks again, matt
