I am buying a 2002 4Runner next week and wanted to know of any nice sounding mufflers that I could get to weld inline with the factory exhaust system. I am a poor college student so the cheaper the better.

I love my flowmaster 40 series. LOTS OF LOW END RESONANCE>>>LOUD! 106 installed for muffler and tip.

flowmaster super 40 is a good medium. some complain that the 40 series is too loud. the magnaflow that elton mention also seems like a good muffler. check out www.flowmaster.com for some info. you could probably buy them for 60-80 bucks on ebay. get them installed for 40-50 bucks depending. they'll add several inches of piping because the muffler is shorter than stock. that's about it. oh i believe yours is the same as mine so center in, offset out. go with 2.25" 2.5" is too much you'll lose a lot of low end.

 

Not sure If I got an original 40 or s super 40. It resonates at 1200-2000 rpm, and gets quieter from 2100-3100rpms, then gets loud again.

magnaflow is good and it was reasonable.

 

I just installed a TRD exhaust on out '96 4Runner, single cat.
It sounds great AND I got it for $200 here on the list.

 

I second the TRD exhaust. It sounds real good but can be really pricey ($700+ from dealer). Check around the internet, I've seen them for $488 new.

 

there are lots of toyota mufflers to choose from. flowmaster is one option. it would really depend on which kind want to have plus the $$$ you wanna spend on it.

 

In Hawaii we like Flow Master! I use the Delta flow 2 chamber. Go with the 3 chamber if you don't want it so loud.

 

Haha....89 4Runner, 3slow with 2 1/2 from Y pipe back and a CheryBomb! Dont go with this if you want to enjoy driving it every day. Maybe it wouldnt be so loud if I had some carpet in the thing! Sorry, no useful info, but I wish I had gone quieter with my setup. Mike

 

I run a flowmaster 50 series on my 3.4l V6. It's a good trade between sounding not stock and sounding wayyy too loud.

 

Gotta toss my vote in for the Jardine catback system. It replaces all that rusty piping from the converter to the chrome tip. And, it comes with a lifetime warranty on the whole system. IIRC, they were selling for ~$250 on the web, or contact Nick at Doug Thorley headers for an even better deal. The sound is just perfect: nice and low without being ricey or too loud. Plus, if you have some basic knowledge on how to repair things and the necessary tools, you can do it yourself and save on labor.
