VIP Key FOB vs regular?

I have a 98 and trying to find the right key fob for it.

I read an old thread that mentioned a VIP version.

How can I tell if I have the VIP alarm system?

How can I determine what FCCID I need for my 98?

Thanks!

guys, seems to be a lot of confusion on this topic. Cant believe there isn't a thread yet with part numbers and fcc id for the different year fobs. Once I get the correct 98 fob I will post the info.

'98 was a changeover year, so there is a lot of conflicting info, all of which may be correct depending on whether early or late month, factory or port/dealer installed, alarm or not. This is why I don't answer. I can't be sure. Don't expect one fob fits all.

Well, I'm no expert but that one should be easy. The only alarm system in 1998 was the dealer/port installed RS3000 and that was a grey 2-button remote in 1998 with FCC ID - BAB237131-022. There were black ones and grey ones. They are identical in apperance other than the case color. The black one is 08191-00870 and the grey is 08191-00871, discontinued and replaced by PT398-07101. The grey one will not work on 1997 and prior vehicles, only 1998..

There are aftermarket equivalents around like this:

Try putting your VIN in here to confirm: http://www.toyotapartszone.com/oem/t...191-00871.html

Nope. That's the factory system that was introduced MY1999. Different FCC number. '99+ only except maybe some late in the year '98's. But not if you have the RS3000 alarm system.

okay well I just ordered 89742-35050 fcc id hyq12bbx from the Toyota dealership. The parts guy told me this was the correct one for my 98 and this remote supersedes the old one now. I will have to see if it works!

That's cool. Sorry, I didn't think you were late enough in '98 to get the '99+ system. Confirm you're good with your VIN here:

http://www.toyotapartszone.com/oem/t...742-35020.html

Where it says "TIP".

I should have kept my mouth shut (fingers quiet).

You were correct this is the part # for my 98 PT398-07101

It just looks a little newer than what was pictured above.

The issue Im having is that either button on the remote can lock or unlock the car.
Maybe I programmed it wrong but it's super weird. And also it doesn't beep when it's locked. Perhaps I programmed it wrong but I have no idea when the car is locked or unlocked with this remote. I don't believe this is how it would be setup from the factory, would be surprising.

Is it normal that either button on the remote can lock or unlock the car?

Also I sometimes hear a beep and other times not when locking and unlocking.

Thanks again!
