Trying to replace my o2 sensor

So I went to the dealer to check out the prices for an o2 sensor..holy
found out that I have Cali emissions so of course the price was about $167. He also told me I can't use anything else or i'll get an engine check light so I need to know is that am I stuck using the $167 OEM parts or can I use the Denso aftermarket? I went to the autozone website and found a Denso 02 sensor for my truck for about $135. I'm going to call autozone to see what they says but I want to be sure before I spend the money. Also I know Cali has stricter emissions control but what IS the difference between that and other types of controls? Like is it about how the engine is program to run or is there extra, specially made, part for that? Thanks

I don't know the answer to your question although I'm under the impression that almost all O2 sensors are pretty similar two wires or four but if you want a good price on factory parts go to partznet.com it looks llike they have them for $106. I've had great experiences with them.

Also check out urdusa.com, I bought one there for my 99 runner for around $90.00.

Cali Truck...Cali O2 sensor. I think $135 for a Denso sounds pretty good. If it were Fed and not Cali, you would be looking at about $90 from URD.

No, you're out of luck. I have a Cali-emissioned truck and I need the more expensive part like you. If you go to URD, it will be $189 or so. I wouldn't trust anything but OEM in your/my situation.

I think they started using the more expensive A/F sensor in 99+ cali emission trucks and had the 02 sensor in all older trucks (cali and fed emissions). I have a 99 federal emissions and it uses the older 02 sensor.

Check this page out and take a look at his rig - 97 2wd 3.4L auto

I think it's the right one and is selling for $88.99.

Verify the part number with the dealer using your VIN then order from URD for the best price. I am 99.99% sure they changed to the A/F sensors in the 99-02 4runners and before that both were just an O2 sensor, but best to verify with the dealer first. The 234-9xxx are the A/F type sensor.

I didn't notice that his was a '97. You're probably right as I first started w/ URD and mine was the $89 + $90 for the Cali emission one. I do have an a/f sensor as mine is a 99.

Jaime has a good recommendation as I did call the dealer w/ my VIN to make sure I need the more expensive 02 sensor. I did so I still don't have one yet.
