trying to ID my gear ratio

So i was trying to decode my rear gear 1997 4runner. My vin number starts with JT but my gear info falls under the 4T gear info. Whats up with that. According to the 4T list i have a : A03A......A=7.5 03=4.10 A= 2 pinion
I cat find anything to figure it out under the jt listing..I found the info on
http://www.toyota.offroad.com/toyota....jsp?id=274535
Any ideas?

Not sure if that table works on the later model diffs, but you can always spin a tire and count driveshaft revs:

Can you really narrow it down to 4.10 or say 4.30 by doing it that way. I know you can do it, ive never had too so i wasnt sure how accurate it is....Thanks

should be able to, like he says, turn it more than a few times, try 10-20, and divide accordingly, that will be more accurate for 4.10 vs 4.30

Ok , if we dont get washed off the map tonight it is supposed to storm tonight. ill try it in the morning. I need to find out cause i found a whole E- locker rear end drum to drum. It would be really nice to just swap out and wire it up and not have to worry about setting up gears for a change. Thanks

Without saying anything difinitively, I heard that if your truck was an auto and came with the E-locker and had the 265/70/16s, it had 4.30s. I am going to verify this tomorrow if we don't get rained on either. Without the E-locker, it was 4.10s.

You can't go based on the 4T list. That is only for vehicles built in California. All (I think, correct me if im wrong) 3rd gens were built in Japan, thus the JT VIN.

IIRC A03A should be a 3.91 diff ratio.

Try this link: http://www.vibratesoftware.com/html_...les.htm#Tacoma

That is the list I used to determine my ratios. I will verify tomorrow with a physical test.

Well, I tried it morning. It turns 4 times and a little bit, maybe close to 3 inches more on the 4th turn. I think it was close to 1/3 of a turn than half a turn. 1/3 would mean i have 4.10. 1/2 of a turn would be 4.30 I would feel better to just go in it and count it up to be exact

Will a complete rear end from a 1999 4runner fit under my 97? Is everything the same to just swap it out?

if you turned wheel 2 times to get 4.10 or 4.30

then if you turn wheel 10 times you will get even 20.5 turns
.......if you turn wheel 20 times you will get even 41 turns of DS, but thats a lot of counting
