Hey guys,

I think its the same for 99-02 models but not sure. I'm looking to replace the front speakers and can't seem to find the true size of the front door speakers. I've read 5.25 and 6.5. I really want to go 6.75 so if anyone knows that would be great. Thanks in advance.

 

6.5" is what i am finding with a quick search here on YT

 

Thanks DC. Yeah thats what I've read too. Some sites say 5.25. Think I'll just order the 6.5's

 

The ones I pulled out were a 5.25". I put some JBL 6.5" speakers in their place. I had to clearance the door itself in the area where the magnet fits into the door, modify the mount, and space them out so the magnet clears the window when it's down. I also trimmed the inside of the door panel itself where it fits over the speaker. If I hadn't, it would have hit and ruined the speaker when I reinstalled it. I would imagine the 6.75" speaker would fit with similar work.

 

Pretty sure their 5.25 (factory).....but the door's will fit up till 6.5.

 

Well like I said, its merely info I am finding through searching here on YT, through what other members have installed. I am not 100% as I do not own that Gen 4Runner anymore.

You could always take your door apart and measure before ordering

 

I put 6.5" speakers in the front of my 99

 

They are an odd size that is close to 6.5" You have to make an adapter to fit in the factory mount. Below you can see how I did mine. I used Focal 6.5" components. I highly recommend them...I decided I did not need a Subwoofer after installing them...nice tight, low bass....I liked them so much, I modified my rear doors to hold 6.5" components also (they were originally 4")....but that's a whole other write up.

If you look close you can see the holes are slightly wider than a 6.5" speaker, but not as much as 6.75"

Thanks for posting that link...I was going to say I thought someone had made an adapter out of the old speaker, but I had forgotten it was you. Great pics...man your 4Runner door was cleaner inside than mine in your pics.

anyone replaed the little speakers there near the window, both of mine are shot, and i cant even figure out how to get the cover off..

 

What's up w/ you Doc! Have not talked to you in a while either. Thanks for the comps too. . Love your 4Runner BTW...I've always liked red 4Runners. Just don't see many of them at all over here.

VSU, I replaced my tweets in that same link posted above...although I did not go into detail "how" I did it (forgot about that.) Anyway, the covers are easy to remove. I've always used a small flat head screwdriver to pry the plastic triangular covers off. Just take your time doing it and it should come off easily. The plastic rivet on the inside may break off if you do it too fast (friend of mine broke his cover when he tried prying it off too quickly.)

 

I put Alpine 6.5s in no problem... Mainly followed Rock Slide's guide, cut the carboard surround off the stock speaker (to leave the metal disc) and the Alpine's fit no problem at all. The black triangles just popped right off and the tweeters got wedged in with foam surrounds (come with the speakers)

And just for grins, if either of your side mirrors become loose, you'll need to pop the same triangular speaker cover off again to access the 3 large bolt heads that hold the mirror in place. Had a buddy of mine's driver side mirror become loose (bolts were trying to come out by themselves) and he had no idea how to fix it. I showed him how easy it was to pop the cover off and tighten the bolts. And to think, he was about to take it to the dealer.... I just make fun of him now.

 

So to confirm, the original speaker is a 6.75 correct?? Thanks for the metal ring tip. I'll probably do this. I have a nice set of components but REALLY don't want to deal with finding a place for the xovers, running the wires, and finding a place for the new tweeters so I've just decided to go with a premium set of coaxials. Should sound good with a good amp.

 

seriously, go check out the Alpine Type-S - the x-overs are real small and attached to the speaker wires and the tweeters fit perfectly under the black triangles, but come with a variety of mounting options in case that doest suit you.

They're really well priced and sound great to boot!
