Gentleman, I just drove from Miami, Florida to Northern, Ca a couple of weeks ago pulling a large trailer in the heat and rain...and noticed gear oil smell and saw that the entire under side was coated from the tcase back early on during the trip. I started to trouble shoot it and after a couple of weeks of checking it out, the problem was solved due to a vent issue. Apparently the transfer case and Transmission (Auto) are vented together and the Transmission vents to the outside by the typical cheap spring and rubber seal... (Same as rear end breather). I simply ran two separate vent hoses to small gas filters and of course ran them up high to prevent water problems... and problem solved. Note: The transfer case was not initially over filled.
Has anyone else experienced this?

 

I just drove under 1000 miles and experienced the same thing! Where are the vents?

It's right under the shifter on the top of the t-case. Pull the center console off and you'll see the breather nipple and a u-shaped piece of hose connecting the t-case and tranny breathers.

 

This might be my problem, mine is leaking as well. It looked loike the seal between the tranny and t-case but it might be this. So can you replace the vent?

 

Yeah I see them w/o pulling the center console, no cracked hoses the vent is all the way up and springy but I cant remember if its supposed to be up or down when hot. All the breather lines are connected, it looks like the oil is coming out of where the shifter goes into the t-case.

Well the damn thing is still leaking I thought maybe my truck assumed it was a Land Rover but I know it's not. It drips and drips slow and easy. Well the last time (today) I pulled the t-case fill plug to check the oil level. The oil level was good or could be reached with my pinky finger. I didn't notice a pressure change (hiss) of air rushing out of the t-case. This would lead me to believe the case isn't venting properly and that might need to be addressed to resolve the leaking issue.

Have you checked to see if the hose that connects the t-case breather nipple to the tranny breather is cracked/split? Bad seal between the top of the t-case and the shifter assembly?

 

I think I might have to drop this thing to figure it out. I believe I did check the breather line and while the hose showed typical signs of heated rubber (small surface cracks) there were no holes or seepage occurring.The seal also seems to be fine but could be stressed to to the pressure build up. Now in my limited knowledge about this t-case like others I would assume it would need to breath when hot. The last time we were at Tellico (last month) the case was really hot! For instance the tranny tunnel was a little warmer than I like. Another indication in my opinion of no venting.
