Okay my Tcase is leaking a little bit and for the 8 bucks in oil seal's I'd figure I'd replace them.

I've got both the front and rear driveshafts removed. And the nut inside off, But cant figure out how to remove the flange that connects the drive shafts...

Do I just beat on it with a BFH ????

 

What you need is a puller. Don't go out and buy one, rent one from your local autoparts. I used a gear puller and the flange came right out. I replace the seals and found that it was not the output shafts that were leaking. I found that the leak was coming from the top of the T/C. The shifter plate seal was leaking. I fixed by using RTV instead of the paper gasket.

 

I can tell its comming from behind the Flange as there is no oil ontop.

I thought this would just like the flange on the axels. (pinnion seals)

It really shouldn't be that hard to remove. It isn't pressed on or anything it just might be "stuck". Before spending the cash renting a puller, give the backside of the flange a little tap with a hammer (not a BFH), then rotate it a little and repeat. If this doesn't work, then go get yourself a puller.

When you put it all back together, be sure to clean off the shaft splines and then coat them with RTV before reinstalling the flange. The splines are a potential leak themselves.

Got the Flange off. Turns out that the Seal Toyota sold me was the wrong one. Part should be in Monday at some point. So Im wheel-less in the mean time.

As for getting the flange off. I Gave it a couple good whacks and she popped right off.

 

Picked up the new transfer case Seal from PartSource last night, After about an hour trying to get the freaken thing in, I called a buddy of mine that works at a garage. Turns out that Partsource sold me the wrong seal Its about 1.5mil to big.

As for the seal that Toyota sold me the first time its the outter Seal that goes into the flange. So now its back to toyota to Order the inner transfer case seal. It'll be a couple days before I can wheel again.

For the tme being I've just left the front driveshaft off and packed the inside of the flange with grease... At least I'll be able to drive to work until the new seals come in. and the grease should help keep my sythenic gear oil from puking all over the road since I killed the original seal.


MORAL of the story:

1: Order parts like Seals and Gaskets FROM the Toyota Direct.

2: if you think the job is only going to take an hour... Think again, its the "EASY" Jobs that take forever.
