I just got done installing a Transmission Cooler on my Runner
You know how it goes a 2 hr job turns into 4-5 hrs
Overall it is a straight forward job, that is unless you have a ARB Winch Bumper installed on your truck first. Without the bumper you just pull the grill off and bolt up and plumb the lines. With the Winch bumper it turns into a job in which you have about 3 inchs for your hands to get around and up in the grill area to work. Needless to say if you enjoy having you hands cut to shreads on the radiator and AC condenser GO FOR IT. Well it's done and if anybody needs any advice on how to make it easier PM me and I will try to give you some short cuts..Later Doug

 

That's why I did the tranny cooler many moons ago when there was LOTS of room!

Glad you got it in there! Now you can look manly with cut up greasy hands!

 

I'm actually going to need to get one of these and install it really soon, which one did you buy? Hayden?

 

For my trans cooler, I used a Tercel a/c condenser with a fan and shroud and mounted it remote. It's tucked up under the bed in my 85 PU. Couple of mechanical temp gauges and I know when the tranny is getting hot, and how fast it cools when I flip the switch

They are all pretty much the same design Hayden, Imperial, B&M etc.
Stick with the stacked plate design, better flow and cooling from what I understand. Later Doug

 

It is rumored that Hayden makes the TRD (equivalent model # 1678) anyway, so why not save some $$$ and get the Hayden. It cost me about $100 total for everything to put my Hayden in and that is a liberal estimate. A definite DIY.

 

Yeah that doesn't sound too bad. I'll be doing it soon then, just need to find a spot to stick it on my 2nd Gen. I guess behind the skid plate is the most common place, just doesn't seem like it'd get the most airflow there.

 

Is a trans-cooler really necessary if you're not towing often? I'll be using the Taco to tow a 6X12 Uhaul box a few hunnerd miles to louisana this weekend (I guess about 800 miles both ways, empty coming back though), and I don't think I'll have time to put a cooler on first (though I could let uhaul install one )
Think the tranny is up to a one-time trip, or should I take pains to do it tomorrow?

If you do a lot of stop-and-go driving, I think the tranny cooler is essential. Anytime that the torque converter is working you're generating LOTS of heat.

Just a thought... What about slapping 2 aux coolers in series somewhere?
would it run too cool? Is it possible to be too cool?
A service rep at the stealership told me that the problem I have with my trans is normal... It has to get to a certain temp before it'll begin to shift. In the morning, when I first start out, I get up to 40 m.p.h in 4 blocks then she shifts.

 

I went and got a hayden hi perf cooler that turned out to be a tube and fin, so I think I'm going to swap it out for a larger plate cooler tomorrow ( and I'll spend 4 extra hours trying to figure out how to get the 11x11/58 inches of cooler to fit).

anybody install theirs in a closed loop with the tranny? I'm thinking of just capping off the leads on the radiator to and from the tranny. Seems to me it's better for the engine and the tranny since you're never adding heat from one to the other. Should a cooler rated for at least 20,000 gvw be able to handle the heat from the trans all by itself?

We just saw our first completely rain free day in at least a week. Feel free to come down and siphon off a few thousand gallons from Lake Travis, though...
