torsion bar crank?

hey!

i need to know how to crank my torsion bars to even things out. my left side is dipping. i sure i'm the only one on this site with pre-95 pick up who doesn't know how to crank em so i'm sure everyone can fill me in on a step by step level. btw what tools will i need?

ps. anyone want to sell me on bilsteins or edelbrock? dunno which to buy.

thanks for all your input in advance!

I haven't done it to mine but apparently all you do is follow the Tbars back towards the rear and there's a bolt that you just crank.

I'm sure someone else will jump in though

While we're talkin' about torsion bars.

Who has 24mm bars?
Do they improve the ride any?
What brand?

I've always thought my stock bars acted like they were bottoming out quite a bit.

all you need is either a box wrench or a socket

If your truck is older like mine (87) you have to look towards the center of the vehicle to find the bolts to crank the torsion bars... Everyone kept telling me "On the sides under the back of the cab and I could never find it" so one day i slid really far under there and looked up and low in the hold... more towards the center

Crank 'em

Yeah, here is where the torsion nut is on 89-95 models....

Count half-turns and crank both sides equally, then measure (with both front tires at same psi) the clearance between the fender and the tire. After this, go get an alignment. the more they are turned, the choppier the ride will become.

I just craked mine about 5 turns and got about 1/8" more hight than before and already noticed the ride was ever so slightly stifer. Was reall easy though. The bolts wern't even hard to turn.

I tried the Downey bars and the bars that Performance Products used to sell, I forget the name of that one but both were equally good. They really do work as they claim and the ride was nice and smooth when cranked up.

I know this is an old thread but in the pic, is that huge nut the torsion bar adjuster? Is there only one?

nah, you don't need an alignment. yup, a crank is a rotation. Check out this for your torsion bar questions:

It will slightly effect the alignment, the more you adjust it, the more effect. I always like to get the front-end height set where I want it BEFORE getting an alignment.

Another thing to look at is why the torsion saged on only the leftside. on the 86-88 the bolt can start to pull through the adjuster frame mount causing it to lose lift and sag on one side and if you just crank it more it will just start pulling the bolt further through the frame mount so look closly at both sides to see if there the same. on my rig I run sway-a-ways 26mm 300m torsion bars and it has a very smooth ride and because there made from 300m chromoly they never sag (same thing racers use) once you adjust them your done no matter how many off road trips you go on they never sag.

You're alingment is effected more the way your truck is now, leaning more towards one side, than adjusting the torsion bars to level out.
