Ticking sound.

There is a slight ticking sound coming from my engine bay. It seems to come from the driver side of the motor. I had it checked out at the dealership and they said it is normal. Does this seem normal? BTW. It is a 2001 4runner limited with 56k miles. I also have a 1997 limited (with 158k miles) and it does not make the ticking noise. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

I am not sure if it is the same thing, but I have a ticking sound that comes from a module/sensor on top of the Charcoal Canister on the driver’s side of the engine bay.

Not sure if this is normal or not....

Ticking could be a small exhaust leak close to the head but it is tough to say without hearing it.

Do you hear it from the inside of the truck? Does it go away when you press on the gas?

I do not hear it from inside the truck. It does not go away when I press the gas. But, when I first startup in the mornings, I do not hear the ticking.

I believe you're just hearing the infamous "ticking device".

My 98 has one too.

Does it also happen with the engine off? If so, then you're hearing the EVAP canister purging. It's part of the emissions control. You'll find that it'll stop if you loosen the gas cap.

I have a 2004 Limited V8 (850 miles) with a similar noise. Right after start up, no tick. After it runs for awhile, I can hear the faint tick, but only from the outside with the hood raised. Holding a listening tube to my ear, it seems to be coming from the top area of the cam chain cover. Under warranty for seven years. Not going to worry about it. Worse things can happen. My Yamaha V Star 650 motorcycle engine ticks and whines. My Suzuki Hayabusa engine rumbles and whines. Must be a Japanese thing.

I'm new to Toyota, but didn't they switch from timing belts to timing chains somewhere along the line? Anyway, whatever the sound is, if your Toyota dealership says it's normal, relax and forget about it. They are doing you a favor.

I have the same ticking on the passenger side of my 98 3.4. I can hear is slightly at freeway speeds too. It is the EVAP valve by the charcoal canister and heard this was normal. I know there was a fix for some late models. You can distincly hear the noise coming from there if you lift the hood and listen closely to it.

look for missing bolts or nuts on the exhaust headers flanges they fall out sometimes and cause a small crack that lets exhaust escape and make a ticking noise when you applythe gas..

I already know its the valve by the charcoal canister making the ticking.
