I'm looking to see if anyone has photos of there thule rack on the 4runner. i want to get a thule rack to replace my facotry but wanna see what it looks like. The facotry set looks real clean. Just want to make sure i like the look before spending the cash...

I don't have a Thule, but here is a pic of my Yakima rack. I have been very happy w/ it so far.

 

I have one, but unfortunately i have no good pix of it. It is off right now for the winter months, and it gets caught in trees when i wheel.

I have the tracker kit, two bike carriers, and the old style fairing. I highly recomend getting locks for the feet. The feet are very simple to get off. That makes it easy for me to take on and off at will, but it also makes it easy for someone else to take it off if you don't lock it.

 

i also notice some of the thule/yakima racks have a little bit of a overhang on each side of the crossbars. is there a reason for that?

Here is my Yakima rack.

 

Mine are 58" crossbars. The reason I got them long was so I could carry two kayaks side-by-side.

Here is a straight-on shot for you.

 

I am pretty sure mine are 50". They don't have very much overhang.

But as terryjmatthew said, you might want longer if you need to hold wider stuff.

with yakima at least you can get different lengths, and if they are too long for your liking, you can pull the plastic end caps, cut the pipes, and put the caps back in, tada, shorter

Not sure if you decided between the two (yakima or thule) but I have had both. I went with yakima with my last set because of the round bars. The square tube on the thule created wind noise. I like running racks without the fairing so it made a difference. Not sure if thule carries round bars now but it made a difference to me. Just my .02

 

yeah i'm down to deciding on thule or yakima..
Anyone have any probems with the yakima round bars rotating? i read some posts that people chose thule for the square bars.

I think the round bars actyually look better. I have thule j-cradles for my sea kayak that i dont want them to come loose. any other advantages / disadvantages for both brands?

Also any good place to buy online. Id llike to get a good deal on them. I think EMS sometimes has a sale on them.

 

Having some flexibility to rotate your attachments on the round bars has some advantages. I have my kayak saddles rotated slightly to better conform to the bottom of the boat. You are stuck with one position with square bars.

 

i also noticed allot of people just put the thule or yakima rack set up right over the factory rack. How come? any photos of that setup would be great.
