Taco mud flaps on a 98 4Runner?

I'd like to take the running boards off of my 4Runner, but before I do I wanted to have some mud flaps ready to install. I thought I had read on a post that the Taco mud flaps can be used with some slight modifications. On a quick search, I found where it would work on a 2nd gen, but nothing definite for a 3rd gen, so I thought I'd just put it out there. I'll search again when I'm out of work, hopefully I can find it then.

The stock flares currently on there are the textured black ones. Will I need mud flaps all around? I wasn't sure if the front flares will still attach without the running boards on there - I haven't looked at the running boards real close yet.

Thanks -

I've been thinking about this mod, too. I did a search on 4X4Wire and found this thread about the same thing. You only need the front pair, as the flares on the rear sort of extend down into a mudflap. There is some good info towards the bottom of the post from 'dandeman'. Good Luck!

My '97 has no running boards and it does have mudflaps. I think you should be able to get them at the dealer.

Thanks Jayson, your posts jogged my memory - I think I had originally read the info on Phong's site, that's probably what I was remembering.

Do i take off the fenders or what? i dont know how it would look but does anyone know where i can get front flaps. I havent really looked around bc i wanna know what people think ... should i take off all the fender flares or leave them and put flaps on the front??? CANT DECIDE!!!

I have a 3rd gen and I took off my running boards when I was replacing my rear bumper. There was another thread here that the guy did this and put on the cheap ($6) mud flaps. I went to Autozone and was going to do this untill I found something that I liked. They had after market molded mud flaps that were very close to the ones left on the back for around $30. I bought those and they look and work great. I'm sure most other auto parts store would carry something simmilar. I bolted them on with the bolts that held on the running boards. They have been on all summer and I have had no problems. Havn't gone through winter (can be brutal here in the northeast) but so far they look like they will hold up. Good luck

You can buy front mud flaps for the 4runners from a Toyota parts dealer. They are styled to match the rears, and look pretty good actually. I had some on for a little while.

I've also got some from Kragen and cut them out to fit correctly, and then drilled into the existing holes. You can also buy material and cut them if you want.

I don't know what you mean by "looks nasty". Are you talking aesthetically or is there problems with the paint, or what?

Dude, you can't call it Cali either...!!! Thats like the worst nick name for California...ever.
