Swapping gauge clusters.

Hi, I have a 98 V6 4X4 5-speed ext cab Tacoma. Just got it. One of the very very few things I dont necessarily like is that it has the 3-gauge cluster (speedo, gas, water). I would like a cluster with the tach, oil, voltage, speedo, water, and fuel. If i could find a culster from a 98 V6 would it be just a plug and play swap? what other crap would i need? would other years work? I did a search and didnt find anything useful except that i may need a new oil pressure sending unit. is that true?

don't believe the 98's had the oil and voltage. just gas, temp, tach and speed.

i know what youre saying. you said that they have a tach. mine doesnt. does anyone here have a 98 with a tach? if so, do you have pics of the cluster? and would one of those work?

Here's some quick info....from 95.5 to 97 the speedo's are cable driven. From 98 to 04 they are plug and play deal if you want to go from the ugly base line one to the sweet 01-04 white faced cluster w/tach. Even though the base line has the odo with the numbers that roll, they are electronically driven. I swapped in a OEM 01-04 cluster in my 99 and LOVE IT ! Also, they need to be from a truck with the same engine size. What I gained was a cluster with tach, and a digital A & B tripometer.

The other beauty of 98 and up is the ease of a intermittent wiper stalk.

so you didnt have to do anything but plug it in? thats it? the tach, water, oil, fuel, speedo, volt gauges all work properly?

edit: your new one doesnt have a oil and volt gauge does it? i cant tell for sure but it doesnt look like it. but im really only worried bout the tach. also, is there any way to get the mileage trued up?

FOR THE UNTEENTH TIME, These things DO NOT have oil pressure and voltage GAUGES !! There is no SR5 gauge cluster like the old school trucks.

We have idiot lights for charge, and an idiot light for oil pressure.

You want an actual gauge you need aftermarket.

Here is my 99's cluster, nothing special.
EDIT : HEre's a better picture..

These were in the trucks from 98-00. 01-04 have the white face..

Plug and play. Remove old, install new. There are 3 plugs in the back, and they plug right into the new one w/tach. It has idiot lights, but I gained the tach, the A&B trip, and the cooler looking face. This has to be 98-04 and the truck has to have the same engine. I even dropped 25,000 miles from my truck when I did this!! (just don't tell whoever buys the truck later...)

doah, I did didn't I....I wrote the mileage down on both so I can keep track of it. I'm an honest person and believe what comes around, goes around, so I'd be upfront and honest to them and let them know the real mileage. I've heard you can get it changed at a calibration shop, but I just get scared when someone messes with my truck.
