Swapping a 3.4L into a 2.7L/3RZ - Is it worth it?

I was considering buying a new/newer tacoma with a V6, mostly due to the huge lack of power that I feel the 2.7 has (especially with my lift/tires). However, I like my truck and feel it suits me just fine. I was considering finding a 3.4 and ECU to swap into my truck. I work with a guy who owns a nice shop and would either help to the work, or do the work for a good deal.

Do you think its really worth it, or does it usually make more sense to just buy the pickup with the 3.4 in it already?

If you want to enjoy your 2.7 come drive my 22re with 35's and 4.88's for a while...the 2.7 will scream..

IMO, get a truck with a 3.4, swap your goodies and sell your 2.7...

If you have a 3rd gen already it won't be nearly as bad as someone trying to shoehorn a 3.4L into a 2nd gen but it is definately not your piece of cake one weekend and I'm done type of project. It's gonna cost some decent $$$$ and require a fair amount of work. You might even try to buy a wrecked donor vehicle with a 3.4L and then just sell the carcass when your're done swapping what you want off of it. I myself, would probably just sell what I had and use that toward buying what I wanted.

1st important question, are the motor mounts the same?? If not, its more work than you want to do. 22RE and 3.slow have different mounts, so 2.7 and 3.4 might too..

X2

If you still want to do it: Find a Nov/Dec 2005 issue of 4wd toyota owner magazine, it features the swap you want to do among many other possible Toyota engine swaps.

This is the cover of the Nov/Dec05 issue:

Unless you have a ton of mods on your truck (SAS, cage, bumpers, etc) then just get a new truck. You'll save a ton of money in the long run.
