Swap 99 cluster for 01?

I've been searching all morning and can't find anything. Is a 01-02 4runner cluster wire compatible with a 99-00 4runner? I've got gas gauge issues and don't want to play cluster roulette with 99-00 clusters and end up with the same problem. I can't find any place that will sell the combo plate #3 without having to install it as well, and I can find used clusters for less than the price of the new plate.

No they are not the same. Different wiring setups, different some different gauges, etc.

You COULD swap the fuel gauge from an 01-02 into your 99 though.

The fuel gauge electronics is part of combo plate #3, which handles the odo, speedo, etc. I don't see how I could switch just that if they aren't wire compatible.

The fuel gauge should just come out as a seperate assembly. Its not part of the speedo, odo, etc as far as I know. Usually just held in with 2 screws to the circuit board

Just went out and verified on a cluster that the Fuel gauge is indeed seperate from the speedo, etc.

In fact, Toyota does list two different part numbers for the two years.

99-00 83882-3D250
01-02 83882-3D570

You MIGHT be able to swap these fuel gauges. I was slightly incorrect when saying you COULD, or at least a little vague. Just because it will swap, doesn't mean it will work correctly. Again, different electronic systems.

Oh! You are talking the physical gauge. I'm trying to avoid TSB010-00, which lives in the combo board.

Circuit board?

In that case, the circuit boards definetly cannot be swapped. The biggest glaring difference is AWD which the 01-02 has, while the 99-00 is true 4WD. The 01-02 gauge cluster has a big chassis/awd indicator smack dab in the middle, the 99-00 just has a 4WD light. The clusters are wired totally different

My 99 Limited has the big chassis/awd indicator smack dab in the middle. I have the AWD mode as well.

The combo #3 is the same for all 99-00 4runners, regardless of 2x4 vs 4x4, or auto vs manual, or limited vs sr5. There is a difference between vin numbers though. VZN18 has a different part number than RZN18.

Regardless, I found a blown resistor on the back of my current board, and jumpered around it. Now my fuel gauge is working perfectly again. Thanks for the help!

Hmm.....well I stand corrected then.

I forgot the Limiteds were AWD. Silly Toyota. My 99 and 2000 were both SR5.
