Supra Swap started
ok im sure most of you remember the lengthy 2JZGTE thread i ran a few months ago. after more planning and talking to people that know thier stuff ive decided on the 7MGTE engine instead.
2 main reasons :
1:cost
2:its been done before
if you wanna follow the progress feel free to check in our 4roc area where im posting pictures and commentary as the process goes along.
here's a direct link if you are REALLY lazy

yea well both your vehicles have great engines in them. it becomes slightly more desirable a job when you are dealing with the lawnmower engine they call the 3.slow

Me too.
I only have the 7M-GE (for now) but it is way better than the 3.slow. No regrets here. I'm actually glad that my 3.0 was blown so i could explain my wife I needed a supra as a donor. The swap cost me about as much as the repairs for the 3.0 and the fuel consumption of it for the last three years.

theres 3 options for me, others exist but dont really fit what i want to do
1:
Use the stock R150 w/ a custom hybrid bellhousing
Pro: uses my stock 5spd tranny
Con: have to cut and weld bellhousings
2:
Use a W56 toyota tranny w/ a MK2 non turbo supra bellhousing. The supra tranny and truck tranny have the same bolt pattern on the tranny end while Mk2 and Mk3 supras both have the same engine side bolt pattern so it would end up like this
7MGTE engine : Mk2 supra bellhousing : W56 tranny
Pro:W56s and Mk2 bellhousings are fairly common in salvage yards given how old the vehicles are
Cons: have to have a different bellhousing from the tranny, ie more leg work and cost
3:
Use the Supra 5sp that comes with the 7mgte
Pro: easiest
Con:doesnt have a tcase on it therefore no 4wd (not sure if you can attatch one or not)
originally i was considering option 1 since i wanted to keep my tranny, turns out my bellhousing has a huge crack in it so out goes that option unless i want to hunt down a new bellhousing for it. Next came option 2 but im having problems finding the bellhousing and tranny in a reasonable ammount of time ( some pre plannig would have aleviated this) so currently im going to option 3 since i no longer need 4wd in my 4runner ( just bought an 84 pickup as a trail rig )
hope this sheds some light on the situation

Good luck on the swap. Seems like everybody's swapping something out right now.

The W58 (Supra non-turbo) bellhousing and W56 tranny are pretty straight-forward, but you're running turbo 6-cyl power through a 4cyl drivetrain. That's fine if you drive it carefully.
The R154 (Supra turbo) tranny is plenty strong, but it has an undesireable first gear ratio (3.25) compared to the R150 (3.8). You could use the OTT divorced transfer case if you desire to keep 4wd. The 3.25 1st gear probably isn't a huge deal if you have appropriate axle gearing and/or xfer case gearing.
Just my 0.02.

probably going to be running 4.88s or 5.29s in the axles after the supra swap is done. i ran 4.56 with the R150 so lets do some math
OLD SETUP
3.8 X 4.56 = 17.3:1 overall 1st gear
FINAL SETUP A
3.25 X 4.88 = 15.8 : 1 overall 1st gear
FINAL SETUP B
3.25 X 5.29 = 17.2 : 1 overall 1st gear
looks like if i do the 5.29s ill end up with the exact same 1st gear. anyone know the 5th gear ratio for the R150? i know the supra turbo tranny has a 5th gear of 0.75 but i guess thats not too bad since a w56 has a 5th gear of 0.85 and is meant for a weak ass 4cyl. i think the supra tranny will work fairly well overall. and like you said . . . as far as 4wd, good to know i can add a tcase later. im sure ill get the urge to SAS it later down the road.
since you've gone ahead and dropped in your 2 cents, mind lending me another $750 or so to ease the finances a little

also, you'll probably need to do a SAS, since the 7mgte oil pan won't clear the IFS differential.

i know the 2JZ is 1994+ or maybe 1993 im not really sure (4th generation supra anyway)
the 7M series and 5M series im not sure the date it changed. obviously the 5M is older than the 7M
already taken the IFS diff out, you can modify the oil pan and pickup to make it fit but i dont care that much.
about that website, good lord. . . that guy is casting his own bellhousings. talk about dedicated.

hey guys, inchworm gear sells a divorced toyota t-case adapter for $335. that way, you could use the stock supra tranny and still mount the yota case behind it

As an owner of both, i would never swap a 7MGTE into anything other than a supra, just not worth the time and effort in my opinion. The 7M can be built almost bullet-proof, however i just wouldnt want another can of worms in my truck
mike j- your local toyo tech
(BTW, I spent thousands on an 87 turbo, only to give it away..)

NSCU-4Runner:
I went for your option 1, use the 3.0 V6 case with a hybrid bellhousing. But you do need a 7M-GE flywheel and complete clutch assembly. The 7M-GTE uses a pull-clutch instead of a pusher like the 3.0 V6.
I can probably make you that hybrid bellhousing. I still have the welding mold. It seems to work since I allready put 10K on it.
Option 2: I can get you that bellhousing. But that W series gearbox is really weak! Get some spares up front!
Option 3: Are you nuts? Ditchin' 4WD? Make a divorced transfercase or use an adapter. Cost a bit more in effort and money, but you still would have 4WD.
My 2 c.

everyone thinks this is such a bad thing. im not worried about TEMPORARILY ditchin 4wd cause im gonna buy THIS MONSTER to have as my offroad toy. anyway, thanks for the offer to make me a bellhousing i really appreciate the thought but im pretty set of using the supra tranny. like you said its way stronger than the W series and ill be able to get a tcase added on later when i get around to SASing the 4runner sometime down the road.
