Is it supposed to smell like that?

I just got my new 2 1/4" exhaust installed today. I went with a cherry bomb glass pack, because I remember hearing a few people say they liked them on their toys. When I first drove it home, I experienced an abrupt change in exhaust tone (it got louder). Beyond that, idling at a stop and when I turn it off, there is a nasty burning smell. Is this the packing in the muffler burning of something? Will it go away? I do have a turndown behind the muffler aimed at the ground, is it just normal exhaust coming into the cabin? On my second drive around, I didn't notice it as much, hardly at all really. But I wanted the experts opinions.

Oh, as for sound... The jury is still out. From inside the cabin it's really loud, almost obnoxious at some points (except when I have oakenfold drowning it out). When I stepped outside and had my friend rev it though, it sounded quieter and milder. I need to find me a friend that can drive stick to give me a demo in a parking lot for the final verdict.

Smell wise... It's probably okay - mine smelled for a couple of days. It's usually the finish and/or protective oil buring off of the muffler.

Noise wise... Yeup. Glasspacks are known to be loud. They were REALLY popular back in the 70's when everyone wanted their Mustangs and 'Cudas to have that deep throaty sound. I dunno that it was the right choice for a 4x4.

The "obnoxious at some points" is happening when the pitch of the exhaust hits the resonant frequency of the cab. The cab walls (and glass) will start vibrating and act like an amplifier.

Sorry man... The only way to tame this may be to cut it off and install a Jardine, Magnaflow or one of the other systems that folks run. The size (length) of the muffler will make a lot of difference as well. Longer is usually quieter, though again, glasspacks are designed to be loud.

Yeah, I may switch out for another muffler. There is actually a kid at my school who has one on his jeep and it sounds pretty cool. Sounds like a v8. If I don't like it I will probably get the hooker aerochamber muffler or something that has more sound muffling qualities to it.

i saw a guy idle through a parking lot in a 4 cyl tacoma yesterday. he had a flowmaster on it(could tell by the big FLOWMASTER bumper sticker), i could've sworn that thing had a v8 in it until he went by me and i heard those signature toyota injectors ticking away it had a nice low rumble to it

i've always been partial to glass packs myself...as long as they don't sound like some stupid rice muffler you see on hondas

Actually, mine sounds alot like yours 96! Its got burble at low RPMs, but it sounds just a little louder/deeper than stock above 2300 rpms. I actually am starting to like it. Because I don't like making that loud burble unless I am punching it, I have been driving more slowly, especially through the neighborhood, which is a good thing, in case any animals happen to cross my path.

Red, we definately have to meet up sometime soon. Maybe you can then give a second yotatech opinion so people don't knock the glasspacks! Maybe next wednesday we can meet up at home depot or something. I just have to check my work schedule. Oh and the overheating, I thought I had it conquered but today it start leaking more and overheating, dumped in more antifreeze got home and after about a minute it starting pouring out of that hose again. I put some RTV silicone sealant around the hose, if that doesn't work, I am going to sauder around the nipple and see if that seals it. Otherwise I may need to go to the yotayard and pick up a radiator.

I think there are several reasons for the loudness (downturn, reverb through the bed, its a glasspack, intake mod), and if it gets too loud with time, I'll chop it off and put something else in, by then Air Force will be paying for the truck so I will have a little cash on the side for a good one.

as far as the smell goes

the pipes that are used for exhaust systems, are coated in a light oil from the factory, to keep them from rusting. Who ever installed the exhaust could have had greasy fingers and put finger prints and smudge marks, that are now burning off. When i got my exhaust put on it not only smelt funny but, had some nasty looking smoke coming out from under the truck. Just give it time and everything will burn off.

Well, I had my friend drive it and it is surprisingly quiet from outside the truck. Even revving it, it didn't seem loud and when he gunned it it did get a little loud, but no where even close to being obnoxious. My dad'll be out in 3 weeks for my graduation, so maybe he can shoot a video and I can get a sound clip to corey, it'd be the first 4 cylinder on his page!
